Lol, hard to believe that :S . I mean all the suspension parts would also have to be sealed somehow, plus air conditioner and so on. I think they just say that, becuase we won't try it. Well, unless Mythbusters try it.

Yep, a bug will float plenty long enough for a commercial. It won't float long enough to use it for a boat, though. I personally watched someone try that (and fail) about twenty years ago.

I would also love to see this on your show. I have see this video on youtube.com too. There is also a video, advertising VWs in Mexico, in which a Bettle is slightly modified and is beeing used as a boat. I have heard that these cars were built so air tight, and that the "pan" frame helps it float. To show it was air tight there is a VW comercial, also on youtube.com, that says that it helps to open a window on the car to shut the door on the first time because it is so air tight. I love the little cars (I want one for my first car) and i love the show. This would be a great myth to try,it combines an untimely myth with the car everyone knows and loves.

You could probably do this in 1968 with a brand new bug, but in 2008 with a 40 year old bug?

I don't think the new Bugs WILL float.

My family has owned many old VW Bugs and I have always heard from VW mechanics, part stores, and family members that due to the air tight compartment the old bugs will float. When my dad and I shut the doors at the same time one of the doors would be forced ajar due to the air pressure. I also have found multiple images of VW bugs floating in water, one picture it looked like they manipulated the engine to have a racing floating Bug, the other is linked here http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/9c/TeddyVWad.jpg . I also have seen the ad talked about in the first post. This site is one dedicated to this advertisement video, http://www.irememberjfk.com/mt/2007/01/the_floating_vw_beetle_ad.php Hence why I believe in the myth, I would love to see it tested. The real trick is to find a old VW Bug with no rust, and in excellent condition... ^_^

They will float for a time. They are sealed up very well but as pointed out there are a number of entry points for water that cannot be easily sealed. After a while they will sink.
Still a neat commercial.
