We were fishing in a tournament in south Florida. It was a Fri to Sat event for Kings,Dolphin, wahoo, tuna. He did well on Fri even though it was very rough for the small 23 ft boat we fished on. Well on Sat as we were going out the inlet we lost power to the motor. It was a very strong outgoing tide heading in to a Strong East wind. The inlet was stacked up with 6 to 8ft waves very close together. We lost power about 3/4 the way out the inlet. The first few waves turned the boat sideways. Then while beam to we took a wave that almost rolled us all the way over. I was scared at that point because I still had my boots and foul weather gear on. The boat righted herself but with one of the gunnel's under water. We were able to get on our life jackets and call the CG. After a few more waves she turned over. Now in the water with those waves crashing down on us and no way to swim against the tide. It was to rough for any other boat to reach us including the CG and local recuse boat. So we spent about 20 min swimming around fighting the waves and current. My buddy got in a small current eddy and was able to make it to some exposed rocks. He timed the waves and got up on the rocks with only a few lacerations from the rocks. My other friend was able to make it to the rocks as well. He got a few more cuts for his attempt. So now it is my turn to get up. Well my timing was a bit off. I missed my grab and fell back on to the rocks. The next wave was coming so I spun around to face it. I would rather go back first in to the rocks then face first!! The wave picked me up and smashed my against the rocks under water. With you body pinned and your head underwater no one can hear you scream!!LOL After that wave I spun around and my friends were able to pull me up. I ended up with a broke foot and well over 200 lacerations on my body. I looked like I was whipped from head to toe. After a trip to the Hosp and some pain meds I felt better and was happy to be alive!! I am mad because I lost my Time Bandit hat!LOL Now people understand why every time I come in from a trip I always say "We Cheated death again"

Originally posted by SlashW: where are you seeing the Katmai mentioned? Dude told an intersting story about being on a sinking boat (or is ship the proper term? I'm never sure).
Quack35, I can't even imagine the respect y'all must have for the force of Mother Nature.
On boat that sank 2 weeks ago!! What would you assume most people that see this are assuming!
Well since the Katmai sank at the end of last year and not two weeks ago it was easy to decipher that he was not in fact refering to that ship sinking.
It's not his fault you assumed something that he did not infer whatsoever. His post was far from babbling. It was a well told true story that he went through.
Quack35, glad to here y'all made it out without too serious of injury.
pnw_farmboy they may have sank last year but it was show 2+weeks ago so the title of the thread implies it might be about the Katmai
neohpa the thread is titled to imply about the boat that sank if he wanted to share his story he should have titled it differently which is why there are more views than posts because that is what most are assuming it is about the boat (Katmai) not his personal tragedy I have seen people post in any of the forums with misc. things that don't really belong there or are under the wrong thread that is all I meant!
First off I would like to thank all of you that wished me well. I am healing up great just a few cuts to go.LOL Get to take off my boot for the broke foot soon as well.
nwsen; buddy I have no idea what set you off. If my story had been about the Katmai I would have said that in the title. I was only sharing a story about a recent event in my life. I grew up in Montauk NY and come from 300 yrs of commercial fisherman. I have lost many friends and family to the sea over the years. I am glad it was not my time to go when the boat I was on went down. May god watch over all of us silly fools that venture out onto the seas.
