Most people think that being a lifeguard is not that dirty, I mean sure you have to clean vomit and poo out of the pool when little kids (or adults) get sick or have an accident, or clean up after a more serious accident (i.e. blood from a head wound or cut)[Remember, lifeguards are trained in first aid, CPR, oxygen administration, blood bourne pathogines and we are often the first responder to the scene],and cleaning the hair and "lint" strainers of organic material is not much fun, but so what? However once a year at our pool we close the facility down and do a full scale clean, drain the pool and give it an acid bath, clean out the lines for the chlorine and one that is "kind of fun" waxing the slides, we also deep clean the locker rooms, the pool deck, and my personal favorite, remove the calcium deposits from the play stucture, tumble buckets, and tile (especially in the steam room). If you are lucky and get a good crew this isn't so bad but if not oof-dah what a time. Just something to think about the next time you go swimming and think that the lifeguards do nothing but sit in a stand twirling their whistle and looking around.
