We used to keep a 50-dog kennel (fun to clean in 100-degree heat), and I worked on a friend's septic-tank truck, but they don't hold a candle to portable toilet work. My wife and I did it for 8 yrs until we got big enough to hire help, but it's ten times as gross as one would expect. The sewage is tolerable if the unit isn't overused, as it often is on construction sites, but you also find unusual things down the tank. Dead animals are the worst. I've seen two stringers of decaying fish, that someone had obviously forgotten in their truck, several squirrels that had fallen in by mistake and drowned, and several rats. Coupled with all the feminine hygiene products, adult diapers, etc., that have to be plucked out before the pump ... it can be a complete gross-out. You get used to it, believe it or not, but it makes most dirty jobs seem like a walk in the park.
I agree with you. Sometimes, there are jobs that are so tough but makes your day good and better knowing that you had just made somebody happy and comfortable. Just like what you said, "most dirty jobs seem like a walk in the park."
