Glamorized in movies, video games, and on television Archaeology has come to be known as a sexy science. However, when we are not fighting through dense forest with a machete, being stalked by bears, surprised by rattlesnakes, dive bombed by hawks, and shot at by angry landowners, we are getting "down and dirty".
Archaeology is the study of ancient people through an examination of the remains they leave behind. These remains, these clues to the past are left in the dirt, sometimes buried deep below the ground surface. And there is only one way to recover them, by digging through that dirt. The dirt itself can also tell about past environment, what people ate, what they used for tools, and generally how they lived.
Archaeology would make a good episode on Dirty Jobs, but it would also make a great new series perhaps "Extreme Archaeology"!
I am an archaeologist with Equinox Research and Consulting International, Inc. on the west coast of Washington and we would love to have the Discovery Channel and Mike come play with us in the dirt.
