My mom is an entomologist and since 1980 she's run a business that has grown into a multimillion dollar business. It is a biological pest control business and our specialty is raising an insect that kills flies (for dairys and poultry houses and pig farms) but in order to raise the insect that kills the fly we have to raise the flies which when in their pupal state are maggots and we have a 3000 sq ft. building with about 1500 kitty litter pans with about 10,000 maggots in each of them. the food that we feed the maggots is made at the Insectary and is a special blend of yeast, dried milk, bran, and wood shavings. When the maggots eat this and then crap it out they create an amonia that is soooooo nasty we go through about 80- 100 employees in ONE summer season...we have a few people who have been working for us for 5-20 years, and they say it is the best job they've ever had. The only way to really grasp the smell (which if anyone has worked in an amonia smelling environment they would know the smell does not go away with one shower) it has been ranked as one of the worst jobs, the stagnant water that is in the fly cages (1 of about 35) is rival only to pig crap. some of the guys and i have said many times that fear factor should have a contest with just this water (which is just water with fly crap, you'd be amazed at how these insects can smell but they are also the cleanest and well taken care of maggots and flys in the world). biological pest control is very affective and is still growing, and should be more supported, cause this way you are not eating pesticides
