I'm an ER nurse and most won't realize the extent of what my job entails, but it gets pretty disgusting. We get frequent gunshot victims, stab wounds, industrial job injuries, etc. But it's the smaller duties that I find endearing. I catheterize patients daily and once it's time to open up, there are times I find vast amounts (or vat amounts) of white creamy cottage cheese like stuff and of course I have to clean everything up. Or how about when I need to insert a nasogastric tube, these are always fun. Theres a point when you are pushing the tube and the patient has the urge to gag and then you just keep telling them to "swallow, swallow!" And EEEEk there it is, vomit all over your face and scrubs. Of course we are supposed to wear masks, but trust me, there are times where you just have NO time to find that mask that's all the way over there so you just start your work. And here's the 3rd best thing.....changing a colostomy bag that's overfilled with s%&t. Those are always a time to cherish ^o^. Basically patients that have this are ones who don't go #2 down there. So instead it dumps out into a bag that's coming out your stomach area and must be cleaned regularly. You can only imagine the rest. And that's my dirty job! ^o^
