My name is Troy and five days a week I drive a semi hauling culls to market, sows from breeding barns to farrrowing barns. Gilts, feederpigs, and babys also need to be moved. I have any where from 9 to 1500 pigs on the truck daily. We wash and disinfect the truck and trailer inside and out at the end of each day to prevent diseases. Besides hauling pigs I also have to work in the breeding barn every third weekend. I start at 5:45 am and the three of us are done by 11:00. We will breed 30-50 sows each on Saturday and turn around and do it again Sunday mornin. When breeding a sow you walk a boar in front of her. Her ears will go up and she locksup if she is in heat. Now for the gross stuff you use a two foot long straw, a tube of semen, insert it and begain rubbing and pushing on her back. Making her think she is being mounted by the boar so the sow will suck the semen from the 4oz tube. Remember you only have to do this two more times to this one. Theres 2700 sows in this barn. The farm I work for produced over 580000 baby pigs last year that either went to market or back into the sow herd.
