My friend Anna resently had a terrible experience with horses. Her bay horse Winny bucked her off. She flew 10 feet and fell unconcious. She was taken away in LifeStar (The helicoptor ambulance that comes out for really bad injuries). Feel free to post any other horse stories.

What was it? Oh yeah, a really rich lady is concerned about my horse 'safety' so she sent a letter to my parents about how a young man was out at a ranch and the horses there were for everyone to ride and I think the horse the man was riding rolled on him somehow and he died.

So Speedcards, what was your parents' reaction to this letter? And how do you react? Does the fact that this lady is "really rich" mean you think she is also anal and clueless and you should make fun of her and ignore what she has to say? Maybe she just cares about you and your safety.

he bucked me off, but not just normal bucking... normal bucking i can handle. this was like a fresh caught mustang stallion who was ticked at the world and ready to eat someone aliveeee.
if i was in a rodeo, i totally would have gotten first place, i stayed on for a solid 10-15 seconds. DOUBLE BUZZZERRR!

i busted my knee pretty good. sooo now she calls me hobb-a-long. she took me out for icecream tho Big Grin

Two years ago I was put in charge of training a newly captured kiger mustang. He wa gorgous. They put him in a large round pen so I could work with him and still have plenty of room between me and him. First I had to gain his trust so I spent about a month sitting on his fence looking and talking to him, letting him know I was no threat. After that I was going to finally approach him. I jumped off the fence and he looked at me suspicously. I sat on the ground in front of him and averted eye contact. I must have stayed there for about 3 hours before he approached me. First he did it slowly, sniffed at me once and ran away quickly, I had to stand still. Then he approached me again, this time he didn't run away. He sniffed at me and sniffed my head. I breathed into his nose as a greating and he breathed back. I slowly got up still averting eyed contact and moved to his withers. I reached out to touch him and he tensed but allowed me to touch him. He looked at me and moved closes and started nuzzling my shirt. Now I could look at him. He just looked back softly and continued nuzzling, sweet Razz. I started walking away and he followed. I grabbed a halter and introduced him to it. He sniffed at it and bite it. To get him more use to it i rubbed him with it. He seemed comfortable so I attempted to put it on him. He flinched once but accepted the halter. I attached him to a lead rope and started walking him around the pen. After about an hour I trusted him enought to walk him outside the pen. I opened the gate and he didn't even attempt to run away. HE walked beside me and observed his surroundings.
Now the accident happened. As I walked him around the corner I girl on her horse galloped around the corner scareing the mustang, he reared up and kicked out at the girl's horse. Her horse reared and knocked me over and the mustang reared and by accident landed on my leg. It broke. The first thing I thought of was the location of the mustang and suprisingly he was standing right next to me looking at me.so i grabbed his lead and pulled myself up, man was i crying. The girl went to get help and I was stuck with a not even close to being broke mustang stallion.WONDERFUL!!!!! The only thing I thought to do was sit there in wait but the mustang had different plans, he started pushing me, can u believe that, pushing me.I hobbled over to him and he started pushing me into him, I thought he was nuts. Then the mustand grabbed my pants leg(good leg) and threw me on his back. I was thinking "On sh*t, he is going to run away with me on his back!! Could this day get any worse!?!?" I am very proud of the mustang today because he didn't run away, he walked into the barn, that he hated, and into the ring where people were. I was very proud. I went to the hospital with a broken tibia and a shattered patella. Worst day of my entire life in the equine world. But that day was the proudest I have even been in that mustang, his name is Dream. Big Grin
Sry for the boring story but I had to explain what happened before the accident. Otherwise it wouldn't have made sense.

My parents didn't really take any account of it into my riding. I mean, I'd wear a helmet before, so it didn't change my safety gear after the letter. I already knew the dangers of a horse, but I trusted my horse and my trainer. Plus I never rode alone or very long. And I never went faster than a canter or near any 'danger' zones. I stayed pretty safe, and my horse was a very good listener. We all understood the dangers, but we were already cautious. I'm not making fun of her, but we have to admit she is VERY paranoid and crazy. She's got a whole story, but it has nothing to do with horses or even animals. We know she can overeact about things, so we just leave her be. We obviously knew more about horses and how to handle them than her. I'd already had that one horse for 3 years, and we had bonded. I wasn't about to do something stupid. We know she wanted to do good, but we were already prepared for riding. The trainer had done a good job, and we were sure to keep him controled.

We knew she was just concerned, but from her previous stories (there is a lot more about her than I can say, and they have nothing to do with animals) we knew we didn't need to pay as much attention to her. We knew the horse, we knew the trainer, and we knew how to be safe. That was the end.

Well, I was around...meh 5 or 6 years old? So this was quite awhile ago, my parents have always been horse people and they each had their own horses. So, they decided to get me a horse, they bought Meg, a 22 year old Mustang mare who had been broke to nothing in her earlier days, she was a pita to catch, but once she was caught, you could do anything with her, a good confidence builder, would you say so? She never reared or bucked, or bolted on me. But one day, we went on a ride, it was me, my mom, and Harold, a friend who broke horses, I had to pee, BAD! But, I figured I could hold it until the ride ended, but, I couldn't. I jumped off of Meg, but it was too late. I wet myself. Well, we were too far out to turn around real quick, so we just kept going, about 30 minutes later my mom said "Would you like to run?" ad I agreed, I had run on Meg a few times before, but nothing huge. Well, little did we know, Meg held her breath when you were tightening the cinch, so, shortly after we took off my saddle flipped underneath of Meg, and I came off. Well, her natural instincts took over, and she bolted. My mom was yelling "HAROLD! HAROLD MEG TOOK OFF!" Before we knew it, he came flying past on his Quarter Horse, Sunny, who he trained, that was one fast horse..he had his lariet with him, luckily, and he eventually caught her. During the wait, I had four trucks stop and ask me if I was okay. I explained what happened and they offered to give me rides, OMG STRANGERS NO! lmao, but about 40 minutes later, they returned, and we resaddled Meg, and were off again, we stopped a few times after that to double check the cinch, but after all the times that I've fallen off a horse, I've NEVER hesitated to get back on. I walked away from that minor accident with a bump on my head (lack of helmet I wear one now) and a few scrapes and bruises.Big Grin We ended up selling Meg for a Quarter Horse gelding, Jake, that I now barrel race, once I learned fully how to ride, I took lessons as well, but only for the basics! Big Grin

I've been really lucky, I've never been thrown off a horse, or been around a bad horse.

When I was in 5th grade, I was letting my mare, Sandtana, graze in the yard, and I was laying on her back reading a book. Not a great idea... she lurched up a steep incline, and I fell off onto wooden steps. I sprained my arm.

That's the worst thing that's ever happened to me in 20 years of being around horses.

Mine isn't nearly as bad as some of your but I will tell it anyways. I was at a show jumping rally (pony club...a rally is basically a show for those of you that don't know) I was heading for a jump and my horse stopped. I fell head first through the standard. I wasn't really hurt too bad.

lets see...I was around 9-10 years old and I had just finished taking lessons. My trainer said he thought I was ready for my first horse, and the horse I had been taking lessons on was for sell and I bought him. a few days later I decided I wanted to go riding on my new horse, I went out in to the pasture to ride around, and low-and-behold my horse was buddy sour. He took off toward the trees(where his buddies were) and he nocked me off with a tree branch. I had a Huge dent in my helment where I had it a rock and a HUGE bruise around my ribs where the branch hit me, and lots of other cuts and brusies.

I work at a trail riding barn and just today I was tacking up a black mare in a western saddle and just as I tightened the girth, she reared fell on the back of the stall and fell on the floor, she fainted!! Can you believe it, she scared the hell out of me and she fainted. she was alright but she fell on my foot and I got a few scratches. I was so worried that she hurt herself but she was ok, thank goodness.

Sorry Speedcards, I was picturing a nice older lady (maybe with 16 cats) writing to your parents after seeing you jump 5-foot barbed-wire fences without a helmet! Glad I was wrong Smile, but too bad the lady is crazy...

I've fallen off many times, but never broke anything--the worst was when I was 12, my horse refused a ditch on cross-country at a show, I landed flat on my back in the ditch and got the wind knocked out of me so bad I couldn't breathe but only wheeze for a minute or two--the worst thing was that my Mom was there and she FORBADE my from continuing the course--oh well, I probably would have been eliminated anyway for going so far over the time allowed.

I've been scraped off twice on trail rides from galloping too fast under low tree branches, but both times nobody saw, my horse came back to get me, and I was able to wash the pine sap off my helmet!

oh wow my stories don't seem nearly as bad as half of your stories. I have really just fallen off numerous amounts of times and had my toe stepped on a whole lot and thats pretty much it.

ok, well this isn't really bad but it scared me, my friend, and my mom half to death.

okay, so i was riding a new mare bareback and toward the end of the ride (i had already been riding for about an hour and a half) she started acting really weird. So i went ahead and jumped off. well she started like almost nipping at the fence. well we thought nothing of it and my friend (she is much older than me...is married and lives on an 8 acre farm near washington state park)was leading the horse, then my mom was next to the horse and i was next to my mom. well all of a sudden the mare reared up and took off at a full canter and leaped over my mom's head. well she started rearing up at the fence again. well first i made sure everyone was alright and my friend decided to go and try to calm the mare down because she was really scared. well she didn't think anything off the pain in her wrist and we just figured that there was a small blackbear in the woods which happend to be right up to the fence line. well, it turned out that she had a broken wrist, and my mom only had a bruse on her leg from the rope hitting her so hard. I was perfectly fine, just a little shook up. WEll later that same week, we found out that what scared the mare so bad was that there was a big litter of bob cat kittens in the woods.
