What are some of your fun and/or exciting trail experiences? I know every time is usually fun, but what are some experiences you've had?
My neighbor, Jennifer and I went riding around town one day. My mare was recovering from a bowed tendon, so she was layed up for three months, then the vet said to ride her a little longer each week. So it had been awhile since I had been on this trail. (My mare, Coco, is terrified not of the usual things you would think would scare a horse, but of weird animals, such as cows, chickens, ducks, geese, emus,...You get the picture). Anyways a helicopter flew low over us and landed in a church parking lot we had just passed (that didn't bother Coco) and so I started telling Jennifer about one time I went camping at Lake Perris when it was on fire. We were warned to be ready to get out at any time, but the fire was never really anywhere near the camp. Some friends, my sister and I went for a ride around the lake and a helicopter came down and picked a load of water up to dump. We were all scared that the horses would freak, but everything was ok. So I was telling Jennifer this and she said what I thought was, "Catch up. I can't hear you." So I nudged Coco into a trot and the next thing I know is she's skidded to a stop, spun around and that's about when I got my bearings and pulled her to a stop; to see an emu staring us in the face. Jennifer was staring and said "I can't believe you stayed on!" (We were bareback) And then, "Didn't you hear me? I said 'Watch out. There's an emu.'" Once the shock wore off we thought it was pretty funny.
I've onlt riden a couple of horses and I've only been on two trail rides, due to the lack of money. I remember my first time ever riding a horse was on a trail ride in lake george, NY last summer. I was terrified especially since my experienced friend was on a horse smaller than the one I was on. He tried to move before we started and I was freaking out inside my head. I got him to a stop though and we started. His name was Claude, and every tree we passed he would try to eat leaves from it. He was adorable. My second trail ride was a few days later also in lake george. This time I rode a mare named Jane. She was pretty good for a while. Then they told us to start troting and I again was freaking out since this was my first time ever troting on a horse. It was awesome though and I didn't ever want to stop. Then we got to a little creek where the horses could stop and get some water. That was an adventure. All in all from those two rides I became very drawn towards horses. They were the best things I did while in Lake George, New York. Soon after some of my friends bought me four lessons at a local stable. I had a great time. Then later in August my best friend got a temperary horse for the summer from her uncle. She has a big field in her back yard and she helped me with learning to ride. This was a mare named Gingerbread. I love her she helped me get over my fear of horses. I use to freak out getting even near a horse. One of my fodest memorys was riding double saddle with my friend galloping down her field. Hopefully when I get old enough to get a job (I am currently 14) I plan on taking lessons again.
I hired a trainer to break my National Show Horse mare when she was 4. I had messed around in the backyard with her saddling her up and working her, but I felt that I wasn't ready to actually train her.
Well, he came out and saddled her up and worked her in our little arena for an hour. He did that twice a week for two weeks, when he told me he wanted to take her on the trail. I was a little apprehensive, but I figured he's the trainer, so sure. (she had been out on the trail plenty of times with me ponying her and walking her)
I rode my older Appy mare, Shy, and he rode Baylee. We took them up into the hills and everything was going fine. It was a beautiful sunny summer day, I was a little behind him when he stopped her. He didn't look worried or anything, I thought maybe he was just giving her a breather, so I stopped next to him and asked, "What are we doing?"
Well, he replied calm as anything, "There's a rattler in the trail up ahead."
I can tell you I almost died! It was very scary! Not 12 feet in front of us was a 4 foot long Western Diamondback! It crossed the trail and went on it's way and we went ours and that was that.
Well, I was so proud when he complimented my NSH mare and said she was the best horse he's ever broke and he couldn't believe she didn't spook at that snake!
