It will take many years for me to overcome the tragedy of Barbaro, but with the Preakness, I have watched my last race. It is purely for man's profit that these magnificent, fragile creatures are pushed beyond their limit. George Vescey ("Racing Can't Afford More Tragedies," The Times, June 6) asks when animal rights' group are going to speak out against this human (NOT humane) narcissism. I ask the same question and mourn the loss of Barbaro.

I think it is very sad about Barbaro also. The last race I watched was the Preakness. WAtching races now just makes me want to scream, run up to my room and cry my eyes and heart out. Frown

Are you SERIOUSLY calling those VETS idiots. Wow. YOU'RE the one who should be deemed an idiot. You have NO IDEA how much PAIN that horse was in. You have NO IDEA what life was like for him. Did you see the videos of the way he walked? ON THE SIDE OF HIS LEG. Ridiculous.

Second, I see it not as a tragedy. There are so many wonderful race horses put down everyday and no one cares about them.

If you're going to mourn for Barbaro, mourn for all other equally who've lost their lives from injury.

Racing young, 3 year-old-horses is cruel!!!!! That's why there are so many deaths/injuries from horse racing. They should wait to race horses 'till there bones fully develope!!!!!

I was angry when i wrote this,I knew that Barbaro had laminits and was in pain. This is what i typed,in true meaning not twords the vets, though it was ment to sound like it,but against myself.Simply I was angry with myself because there was nothing i could do to help Barbaro.

I apologize.

I'm not TOO familiar with Laminitis, but it does affect the hooves. Generally it's caused when one hoof is compensating weight for another leg.

Like in Barbaro's case the leg he injured wasn't able to bare much weight of course, so the oppsite leg was carrying most of the weight that would generall be carried by the injured leg. The hoof ust basically breaks down.

It can be caused by others things as well and a lot of times horses with Cushings will develope it.

google it, i'm sure you'll find a lot of info on it.

in my opinion, racing should be illegal, its pushing the horses way to far, horses were not made to be shoved up in a gate and let out into a mess of galloping horses with whips hitting them, they should be grazing and should have a loving home, or they should be free. i cried when barbaro died and we all miss him.

Those horses are bred ot do those things. It would be more cruel to make other breeds do those things.

If you want to stop racing, you have to get rid of the racehorses.

Let me put it this way racing is what they were born and bred to do.It is in there boodlines.
They live to run and race. When they get out there on that track they start to get jumpy and all excited. They just plain love it.
