I was personally drawn more to the sport aspect of fighting. I didnt grow up doing traditional martial arts as a kid (Kung Fu, Karate etc.). Dad got me into boxing a little bit, wrestled in high school, got into Jiu-Jitsu while at UCLA. So i kind of went down the professional path from the beginning. I learned more about traditional martial arts during the show obviously and i have have a profound respect for that side of the fighting arts, but my background is more on the sport side and that is what i have always been drawn to.
Hello there...just finished watching the China show and I really enjoyed it.
Anyway, the training seem to be an intense experience on a deeper level than just physical training. Do you feel your experience in China changed you, philosophically or spiritually or whatever?
Hey, just want to say that I saw the first episode and really like the show. Which country and which fighting style would you say give you and Doug the hardest workout? Furthermore, which martial art did you enjoy training in the most?
Yes, my experiences in China did have a profound affect on me. The Fa-Wang temple was perhaps the most peaceful place i have ever seen and staying there for a week allowed me to take at least some of that peace back home with me. Real strength comes from the heart and mind, no one understands that better than the monks I lived with in China
LOL, there is no way a can answer your question without having my butt kicked by a dozen angry martial arts masters Every fighting style's workout was hard. The producers and the trainers made sure that we were pushed everywhere we went. What people might find interesting is the fact that a lot of styles that were brutal were often easier for me than a style that required less contact and more grace and flexibility, attributes i am seriously lacking. Hope that answers your question a bit.
I love how Jimmy and Doug trained with separate systems. I heard that Pekiti Tirisa is where Doug trained and they teach the Recon Marines and that Leo Gaje put Doug through the indeginous traditional training to include some blood ritual to immerse and condition the mind and spirit of Kali. What was Jimmy's training like with the MOdern Arnis?
Alos I did not understand why Jimmy and Doug faced of with the two fighters from Pekiti tirisa? Where were the Modern Arnis fighters? Why did they not fight Jimmy or Doug?
BTW , judging from the Shaolin show, you guys show more heart in learning the arts than the human weapon hosts .
You can catch Dog talking about the ritual initiation on a video clip that is on this site. I dont want to give away too much about my training before the show airs on Friday, but it was a GREAT experience. As for our opponents at the end; the opponents in each episode were typically chosen by our masters. In this case Leo chose our opponents so naturally they were his top students. I didn't really understand the difference between Arnis fighters and the ones we fought. Bear in mind that we only have 5 days of training and that there are a MILLION FMA systems out there, so i never got a clear idea about the differences between the systems.
They were not Leo's top students but definitely the fighters of PTK in Manila as they are Recon marines and both have killed one of them has 7 confirmed kills. 3 via blade to blade . Hence PTK's choice of as little protection as posible and the live blade training even in the demos compared to padded sticks and demos with sticks where the edge is not as respected in live action. But as crazy as we Pinoys are and can be with our love for the reality of the blade. I hope you had a chance to enjoy some of the sights and hospitality of the Philippines.
BTW I appreciate your no BS talk and down to earthness seen in the Kung Fu episode unlike the "Human weapon" where the host are always giving side comments and we can make do without " a strike like this is as hard as the balls of a goat comming at you at 300 miles per hour...or somethg like that
Looking forward to your honest insights after the kali episode. I take it you will expand on each episode after it is aired?
SO.....I was in this brewery in San Fran called the "thirsty bear" at the "rap" party for "fight Quest" and i saw this guy that looked just like jimmy, but he had a black eye?
I noticed that on the Kali episode that, on the night before the final fight with the marines, you go to bed unscathed, but you wake up with a black eye and a cut lip. Was this an editing error, or did you punch yourself while you were sleeping? Maybe you can tell us a good story about the Manila nightlife. ~T
Jimmy and Doug have you done or will you do Southern Dragon Claw(may also be called Dragon Kung Fu), Tai Chi(also called Tai Chi Chuan and Taiji), Hsing Yi(also called Xingyiquan), Ba Gua(also called Baguazhang), Southern Praying Mantis, Xing Yi(also called Xingyiquan but may be different from Hsing Yi), Northern Shaolin(a style of Kung Fu), or Hung Gar(also called Hung Ga and Hung Kuen)? Theses are all Chinese martial arts. Sorry that kinda a lot.
