Hello Dave,
You know that there are dirty jobs everywhere. Tonights episode was lacking. Not because Mike was not dangling from a high place or being silly enough. How many times can you artificially inseminate an animal or stick something up their butts? Sucking semen from a turkey was not that great and a turkey's genitals with semen coming out was not all that educational.
The car crushing segment was pretty cool and it would have been nice to see more of that.
With the "Moments with Mike", can you use something we've never seen before? I am sure a lot of your footage is edited out and it seems silly to use the same stuff again.
Just my humble opinion.

Lisa-
Sorry you did not enjoy this one very much.
I'm not sure if you saw a while ago my points for a good segment- or rather how we choose segments. Given that in mind, it is harder to find things we have yet to do. So, there are more and more that I am "killing" before we even shoot.
However, most of the time the research is complete and good. And I always try to find SOMETHING new, even if the crux of the job- or the outcome is something you have seen before. It may be environment, it may be a small or really dirty process not covered previously (e.g. concrete stamping).
I will disagree with you about the turkey segment- if you did not know that that was how it was done (maybe you did) then you were educated about SOMETHING by the segment's end. But please remember, we want to educate, yes, because we are Discovery, but we need to entertain as well. And of course, not everyone's definition matches. I know that not everyone will like every segment, but I also know that at least some ONE will enjoy something about any given segment.
Actually, that turkey idea rolled in almost 2 years ago via a video from the farm and I soooo wanted to do it, but there was some "concern" in the ranks. Well, they came to their senses.

I enjoyed the epi, though my "Uncomfortable Meter" completely redlined. Those turkeys were ... disturbing.
And I prolly now know a little more about the getting of turklets than I really wanted or needed to.
But more and more I'm watching DJ for the production values. For instance, Mike's intro to the turkey segment was so well done...the perfectly timed walk through the snow-covered grass (and your audio guys are *good*...no wind or crunching frozen plant sounds in Mike's mics) to a perfectly framed shot of the briskly snapping flag, the farm sign, and the rock for Mike to sit on.
Those little details do not happen overnight; it's obvious the years of "dues paying" by host and crew are now providing some excellent returns.

I loved the turkey segment. I was rolling. It was the mastic segment that bugged me, and I have just now put my finger on what it was. Most jobs we get to see 'finished.' The billboard is put up, the eggs are collected, the boat is unloaded, etc. With the house, I wanted so badly for them to go back and run that pressurizing machine to see what kind of difference the mastic and plastic made. When we didn't get to see that...it made the segment feel unfinished to me. I understand it would have taken days, but the OCD side of me wanted completion. There was...ahhhhh...completion...with the turkeys. Wow...that sounded nothing like what it should have. Din0

Thank you Dave,
I love your work. It was obvious that everyone was frustrated with the house segment and not every show it going to be a hit.
What happened with the car crushing, It was so short?
Yes I did learn something, thank you.
