Dave...did you read this in the Mud Room? Check out the post from Mike, and the post below it from Wilkweb.

And you wonder why people are so distrustful of what they see on TV.

Nice catch, Rita!
I pretty much view TV as one big, blinking, in house billboard invented for the sole purpose of getting me to spend more of my money on a toy, cleaning product, at a particular vacation spot, , &c.

So much of what is presented on TV is massaged to make what we see seem real or authentic.... I don't think that viewers can be blamed for occasionally getting/being jaded regarding content of a show.

What I like about DJ is the lack of the subliminal sell. We aren't asked to support coffee growers or soap makers or to knit with alpaca yarn.... some of us just do it for the experience and others for the "fan factor". I need a new car and OH BOY, would I love to buy one of the F150 extended cab pickup trucks (and yes, some of you may remember that I poked fun at those who bought Ford Tshirts way back when). I would LIKE a laptop - been in the market now for about 18months - and I would LOVE the HP TX2000z... all it's bells and whistles come together at a place where my inflated desires meet my paltry budget ... unfortunately, read the previous sentence. sigh. eventual new car means no lap top for DirtEmom!

I'll be going to the Freund Family Farmstand in a couple of weeks. But, it's a piece of home for me. The fan in me will buy some poopots for the peonies we will be planting at home. The New Englander in me will buy an apple pie because Yankee Magazine rated the FFF apple pie one of the best of the Top 25 New England Foods (even though the apples come from New York!).

I still have a great distrust for 90% of what's on TV... NPR's getting on my nerves lately, too....
xo to all

Ruh-Roh!

I always get nervous when my name gets brought up in conversation. In this case though I am not worried.

Those who come to the crew board saw Dave's answer to the questioning of the authenticity/reality of the controversial shot. See here...

It is just truly amazing, but not altogether baffling, just how distrustful of television some of you are. Like Dirty Jobs has some sort of agenda or quota in regards to peddling flesh.

AND

wilkweb: To a certain degree all segment end wraps are staged, just so Mike can sum up in a clear way, as in the case of the goat soap segment. Why was he naked? How else would one take a shower with soap. That was my idea, as a tribute to one of my favorite shows, The Monkees.

To be honest, I don't care Dave. I enjoyed it. I merely used tha segment as an example, although any number could be used. I guess what I should have said was, I see it for what it is and appreciate it. I have enough reality, in my reality.

I align with Mike on the one fact. All TV is a "production." It doesn't mean I don't like it. It just means you aren't going to sell me that used Chevy someday. Wink

Kristi

P.S Dave, I shower with soap naked. If Mike was...bully for him. He has more...uh..cajones than I do anyway.

Monkee away.

Sorry Kristi, If I was out of turn in using your post as an example.

I'm glad you're OK with the "staging" of certain events.

No harm Rita. Smile I wasn't angry in the slightest. I believe I saw what you were going for in your post. (actually I hadn't seen Dave's second response so...thanks!)

I was just shocked someone used my name. You don't have a fever do you? Wink

More seriously though, I think it's good policy question any "reality" series you watch. I love The Ultimate Fighter. A friend was a fighter on season one. I was talking to him and praised him for his demeanor on the show. His response: It was editing. He had his crazy moments, and out of character moments, but the editors chose to focus on another story line.

The impression was more than was there.

In Mike's response he is honest in saying that no reality is reality if it is on television. Dave's response is honest in that he is seeing something from his perspective.

Editing can make a sinner a saint and vice versa. Look what editing does for Mike? Wink

No fever here, Kristi, although you'd be hard pressed to tell it sometimes. Wink

I guess I was a bit dismayed at Mike's post. Call me naive, but I guess I never thought of DJ as being "produced", if you will, in the sense that they actually sit around and think about what would be funny to do in a certain circumstance, other than at the beginning and end of the show when Mike pleads for suggestions.

Although I respect the honesty of Mike and Dave, I'm not sure if I will look at DJ in the same way. I may be always wondering about who told who to do this or say that to garner some kind of comedic effect.

Editing may be just Mike's best friend. Wink
