I read the Detroit Lakes Article in which they interview Mr. Thompson concerning the Pickerel Lake car retrieval episode. He stated that no other camera's were allowed to record anything while the DJ's crew was there. I get it.
My question is: has it always been that way, or has youtube, blogs, message boards, internet in general, etc. made producing television more challanging then before?
Is that what you have Ira for? (among other things)
I like learning what it takes to produce quality, educational television. Thanks, Janeece

Yes, this is true, it has made it harder. Networks have NEVER allowed filming during a show, but it is almost impossible to keep up with nowadays. Flashes going off could ruin a shot. The big deal is the fact that we are so mobile while we shoot, and our cameras turn in every direction. It just looks stupid if we turn around and see a half a dozen people without work garb on for whatever the job at hand is facing us holding video cameras and cell phones.
The popularity of the show has intensified this problem, with children under 10 hanging out (brought by parents) at industrial sites and the like! And yes, I need Ira to be the bear sometimes, although he is too nice for that job.
Its truly my biggest burden on this show, and it wears me down. I have to keep track of every move of at least 7 people (the crew and Mike) every day. Then there are our hosts of course. Now I have to be aware of people who have nothing to do with the job? It is hard.
We are always willing to make time for friends and family of our host, but I tell them (at least a week before the job) that no one can be around during the shoot, but we will make time for everyone who wants pics and autographs of Mike after the shoot. It usually works out fine, but not always. I have had to politely (most of the time) kick out owners of property and businesses because the don't really do the work, yet they want to hang out and watch.
Wanna pi$$ Barsky off? Hang out and watch us shoot.
Thanks for watching (from your own home), Dave

You mean, like the scene in one of the Dirty Harrys, where the camera pans around and there is some idiot standing in the middle of a crosswalk, watching the goings on? We were watching filming (in an approved area) of scenes for 21, on the Harvard Quad. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vB9W_s-liASecurity was asking some people to move (get out of the shot). One guy was actually arguing, "I eat my ,unch here every day. Either include me or shoot around me, I'm not moving." He was "helped" out of the area. We applauded the officer, as they passed. Anne

I didn't realize how big a problem it could be having people hang about, but now that you put it that way, Dave, it must be a pain in the a$$ to deal with. I don't think I could do what you do.

Barsky,
When does the Beer drinking come into play? Before, during, or after the taping? Or do you figure its a GOOD thing, to down a few throughout the whole shoot......you know, to keep everyone loose. Are you knocking a few COLD ones back, sitting at the airport now?
Take it Easy, Dave
