I loved this week's episode. Zaphod is still such a handsome kat. I thought Stockard did a great job. She's getting into it. I laughed out loud a few times. I see what they mean by sassy.
I'm still loveing it. I like Stockard Channing. I think she will improve. I love seeing Zapod teaching the next generation how it's done. We didn't see this side of him before Flower's death. He was her shadow, always there to chase of his rivals, grooming her, and fighting for the family. He is still the King of the desert. He did not have to tell Wilson to leave. It looks like the other males still respect him. I would like to see Maybelline have a mate thought. I think Flower's death is still affecting everyone.
This week's episode was pretty good. I loved seeing Zaphod doing his thing. He is such a handsome looking kat, I think I would imagine him as the Sean Connery of meerkats! He is doing a great job of teaching the next generation, the meerkat way and doing a fine job of running off this daughter's suitors, like any dad would, lol. The beginning of the S4 has been a great departure from the sadness of season 3, which is fine with me. I've beeing keeping an open mind about Stockard Channing as the narrator, this week was a bit better. Let's hope as the season progresses, her narration progresses also, and it won't be as big of an issue anymore and we can just focus on the lives of our lovely Meerkats!!
This season is keeping the good start going! Channing is getting a bit better and there's lots more memorable content packed into each episode!
I see the Mongoose returns XD AND he gave Murray a nip. He's probably like "THAT'LL learn ya!" loved the closeup of it, they're such beautiful creatures
Wilson just moved right in didn't he? ;p Wilson and Sophie was just such a romantic scene ^_^ But it wasn't good news for her OR rocket dog. I wonder if Sophie could potentially oust RD and become dominant with Wilson at her side. or is that far too great of a longshot?
Zaphod seems to be enjoying his new job of ruining everyones romance ;p
Mention of poor Mozart brought back painful memories
I like the plot. I see development on the storylines in both the Aztecs and Whiskers. I think we will be seeing more of Wilson.
I gotta say that Stockard Channing was awful. I thought she was tripping over herself trying to embellish the script. Just the way she started with that long, dramatic delivery of "there, in the distance, sits a lone, solitary figure". I thought she really hammed up the whole scene with Wilson and Sophie. I always watch the show with my 9 and 12 year old daughters, so I didnt say anything. The 12 year old said "that narrator really needs to get over herself" and "where is the old narrator". My 9 year old said she thought the narrator sounded like she was reading to kindergarteners. Both walked out after 15 minutes.
I can applaud the producers for trying to incorporate a new narrator into the "next generation" concept, but enough is enough. Bring back Sean.
I am very eager to see how this season plays out. Whith all the boys going into hormonal overdrive we should have a very interesting seaason. Here is to all the boys as they rove the Kalahari insearch of love and romance.
This is a lot better than last year so far. Momakat
Once again, I can't tell you what happened. I had a hard time staying focused on the show. Was easily distracted.
But right afterwards there is this show about elephants that paint. I'm watching IT and am fully involved.
Sorry....Stockard Channing is just NOT doing it for me. (And I still HATE "Meet the Residents" and the Whiskers listed dead LAST.) Big mistake. Both of those decisions. And I think the ratings are supporting ME in this estimate.
I watched the earlier show of the Elephant that can paint, and it is amazing what that Elephant can do. I did not get a chance to watch the 2nd episode of MM when it aired at 9:00pm, but did watch the rerun. I think that Channing did a much better job on the 1st episode then the 2nd one, but still believe she is doing a good job. It was a great episode with Wilson, Maybelline, Sophie and Rocket Dog, but it does seem like the show is more of a comedy then episode 1, which is ok with me. I think Sean made it more realistic , even though some scenes were fictional from his narration, then Channing is doing, but that's the way changes come and go.
Really, why not say "Meet the Meerkats" rather than residents - and if you make the Whiskers last, make it bigger - (like they do on the soaps - you start off with a good one and end with a good one - and the middle are the fillers) I always liked Stockard Channing - but I am so used to Sean Astin's voice that it almost doesn't seem like I am watching the same show - most of the issues I have with the episode have more to do with spoiler issues so can't be discussed here - but I have a question - this is filmed in HD right - because sometimes some shots in the distance look fake at first - also - I think they are doing it for effect - but sometimes they are out of focus and then come into focus -
Is Wilson after the Casanova of the Desert title??
Murry is starting to win some points in this house even if the ladies in Aztecs don't notice
Zaphod and his Merry Men had me laughing a couple of times and at least this week the narration didn't seem to be one negative of his age or status. I too see him as the Sean Connery type... and like any dad only wants the best for his daughters!
Seems to me like they are trying for some lighter narration, focusing some on humor, maybe to try and overcome the season ending sadness.
Sadly though for me.. I get a little pull at my heart whenever I see a certain other DF.
It's funny, last night I found myself several times not even hearing the narration, just seeing the meerkats, yellow mongoose, and the gorgeous scenery. That makes it hard on a jeopardy player seeing as how alot of the questions are going to come from what the narrator says. lol I did love the episode, little Murray, Zaphod, RD, all the kats. Just couldn't seem to stay tuned in to the narration. Not being negative, just honest.
I'm proud of Zaphod. He refuses to give up. He acts like a human father, protecting his daughters from guys. He also takes time to have some fun. I bet the people who are doing the research are enjoying watching him.
Wilson got a chance to be Maybelline's DM, but then Zaphod stopped it. Then, he lured Sophie in, and now he is alone once more. I hope things get better for him.
Sophie is really cute. It would be a shame if she is pregnant because she would have to leave the mob, with or without her pups. I believe that Rocket Dog handled things appropriately, disciplining her and hopefully deterring future insubordination.
I loved it. It seemed light hearted and after last season it was fun to watch. No deaths, some romance and I just LOVED the music when the romantic scene came on. That was brilliant. SC did a good job. I think it will all be ok. I was sad when Mozart was mentioned but I will just sit back and enjoy it. Before too long the season will be over and I will be begging for more. I like when they show Zaphod going back and forth from daughter to daughter. Bless his little heart....The senior citizen....we need to think of a more appropriate name for him than that. Maybe the old wise one or something like that. Anyway, cannot wait for the next episode.
I loved the first 3 seasons of Meerkat Manor. The narration this 4th season is so dull now that I can't stay awake to watch the show. I am disappointed that they would have to use such a boring voice. I know that I am spinning my wheels because the producers are going to do what they want. The show looks interesting enough this season, I love those Meerkats...but Ms. Channings voice does not fit this show and has ruined it for me. Though, I will keep trying to watch the program because I want to see what happens to those awesome Meerkats...I can't say that I am enjoying it like before...a good narrator makes the show!
After witnessing a harrowing Season Three, this season has been a relief--so far. Though I missed Flower terribly, I watched with a great deal of concern for the fledgling Rocket Dog and Maybelline. And I had to laugh when I witnessed Zaphod butting into his daughters' lives. Although I miss Sean Astin's narration, I grew accustomed to Ms. Channing's. No, she didn't emote the same way Sean did, but I am sure she'll get better. My heart lurched when Mozart was mentioned, and now it seems I have to worry about Sophie as well. If she gets pregnant... All in all, it was pretty good, but I'd like to see some pups!!! Zaphod, stop butting in! Let your daughters hook up with some DMs!

I agree they should bring back Sean Astin...but the producers are going to do what they want...it does seem like a different show now...Sean added that extra magic that made the show pop! I still love the meerkats, but it is hard to watch with such poor narration!

I agree with Pronker. Good landscapes but I want more of the meerkats. Seems like there is a gap in time (pause) when more might be told. Want to see more of the groups. I know that we need to see all the groups and how they are interacting as one becomes larger and one dwindles. Did love Wilson and Sophie. Just like a good soap, keep us hanging until the next episode. I am still not sure about Stockard's voice. A little shaking. Need a strong voice to tell about strong females! Maybe she'll improve as she gets comfortable with the "kats".
Isn't it sad that the majority of people here do not want to talk about the content of the episode? The whole narrator issue has blown up on the producers. And, it is growing out of control. The word is that the producers wanted "to take the show in a different direction." I think anyone that has any intelligence understands that this is show biz speak. Translation: If we told you the real reason why we axed Astin and hired Channing, it would make us look terrible. So, we will feed you this line and hope it will blow over. It's not going to blow over. Newsflash: MM ratings are crashing and the producers have effectively killed the show. Translation back to show biz speak: Fonzie just jumped the shark. If the MM producers don't bring back Astin, then their brief successful careers have ended. They will be remembered as the fools who ruined a gold mine. Nobody will want to hire them after this. Let's just hope that they have the humility to admit that they were wrong. Whatever it costs, bring back Sean. Otherwise, you might as well move on to "Laverne and Shirley" mode.
I still love the show! I watch the show because of the meerkats reguardless of who the narriator is. I thought the info during the ads was great, I kept watching and did not even go for snacks during the commercial (I watch Torchwood and was wondering why AP never thought of that before) glad they did, great concept!!! I thought the content of the show was wonderful, to me it looks like AP is trying to tell the truth as best as they can/or know how. I just love the show and do not wish to pick it apart.
I think its sad that the Majority still want to talk about the Narrator. Its a done deal for this season. Saddly, everyone wants to keep harping about it. I loved Sean, but it is what is is.
I loved the show. Zaphod is going back and forth between his daughters, much to their dismay. Not that they dont love dad, but a woman has to have a man. Is Wilson the new Carlos? He sure did good with the whisker ladies. I do worry about Sophie now, she might be evicted. Maybe not, Rocket Dog seems to have a bit sweeter nature then her sis.
I thought the scene between Wilson and Sophie was cute and very romantic. Its great to see Zaphod, hes hanging in their and doing what he knows best. I cant wait to see the next show.
I watch to see the meerkats too. I dont see the point in getting a bad attitude about the changes, and letting that stop me from following Flowers beautiful girls.
The episode was great. I do think that the narrator is doing good and I'm geting used to it now. Might as well if she's doing the whole season. Poor Maybelline and RD.....still no mates for eather. & just when there was hope for Maybelline....poof, it's gone. That's life for ya......a meerkat's anyway. Hopefuly Zaphod will find a place in a new mob soon insted of interfearing with his daughters' problem of finding a mate. Hope Wilson and Sophie are going to be ok.
It's not nitpicking because it is not an insignificant change. The role of the narrator is a huge component to this show's presentation and success. This fact cannot be discounted. And, the whole basis of creating a voice for the viewers is to express what works and what does not. If a few thousand complaints make the show better then it is not a "bad attitude." It's called constructive criticism. Just like the show, not everything in this chat is going to be rainbows and unicorns. Also, the attitude that it is a done deal for the season is incorrect. Sponsers base their marketing choices on weekly/monthly ratings. If the sponsers realize that their message is reaching fewer people, then they will concentrate their efforts elsewhere. In the showbiz world, money talks and ratings matter. We are talking about alot of money and a significant ratings drop. When a "different direction" doesn't work, a "midseason retooling" is usually the prescribed remedy. It happens all the time. Currently, this show is the flagship of the network. I think that the powers that be will be motivated to make sure that they get this one right. It is far to important to the perception of the audience and sponsers to continue to let it bleed like this. Expect a change sooner rahter than later. But, don't let my opinion or a thousand other chat blasters spoil your enjoyment of the show. I really don't see how that is even relevant. Based on the multitude of responses, the narrator change is a huge issue. Alot of us are trying to save the show. It is my opinion that burying your head in the sand is not an effective way to bring about change. But, to each their own. There are wolves and there are sheep. Know who you are and be that person.
keschameerkat: I so agree with you. Let's just sit back and enjoy this season. Before too long it will be over and we will have only memories of the past. Let's just love it as much as we can. After all it is Meerkats, Flower's legacy and Zaphod is still here with us to see each week.
I watch MM for the kats and they are so entertaing, and moe interesting then many of the shows on primetime TV right now. Wonder if the yellow mongoose is going to a recurring character, I think the name of Goldie would fit the little yellow one and the little creature and Murry sure do push each others buttons.
While there is the drama of a good place to live for both the Whiskers and the Aztecs, it's a relief to see the mating shenanigans going on right now. Although I also liked Sean Astin, I think SC is doing fine, especially compared to Whoopie in the movie. I'm looking forward to the whole season that I'm sure will be over way too soon.
kesch: Where in my statement did I imply or infer that you do not have the right to state your opinions? I believe I was making the exact opposite statement. We all have the right to say what we think, even if we don't agree with each other. Just because I do not agree with your conclusions does not give you the right to tell me to "take it elsewhere." That is blatant hypocrisy. It's funny how you accuse me of the very thing you are doing. Ironic huh? Further, I stated plainly that mine or anyone else's opinion should not hinder you from watching the show. Why would it? That's a little silly and trivial don't you think? The point of the matter is that the squeaky wheel gets the grease. If we all agree to "sign a petition and shut-up" then I can guarantee you that no change will be made. A flimsy online petition is not adequate motivation to change anyone's mind. The number and authenticity of each e-signature can be easily challenged by a determined producer. And, this is assuming that they really care about it in the first place. That is a very weak foundation to build your hopes upon. It is my choice, and my choice alone, to take a different approach. You do your thing and I'll do mine. OK? Finally, your conclusion that because it has been filmed no change can be made is ludicrous. Audio tracks can be rerecorded with the utmost ease. The narrator's comments go in after the initial soundtrack and filming have been laid down. All it takes is a push of a few buttons and there you have it. It would be very, very easy to change. Do you really think that Stockard is out there in the Kalahari, microphone in hand, with the Meerkats? That's kinda funny. Are you for real? Regardless, the topic here is to express our opinion of the last episode. I did that. And, I'll keep doing this as long as I see fit. You do not have the authority to tell me otherwise. If you cannot handle people who disagree with you, perhaps you should take your own advice. I do not need you to confirm what I know to be correct. But, thanks for withdrawing in advance. The bottom line is I loved the Meerkats show. But, the Meerkats I'm watching now is not that show. Whether you agree or disagree is immaterial to me. So, you have a good one as well. Tudaloo!
Please refrain from making this a personal exchange over opinions.
There are several threads under the main forum in which the specific topic regarding the new narrator is being discussed. Much appreciated if content relevant to that main theme can be discussed on those existing threads.
Anymore feedback regarding the actual content of this episode... storyline, cinematography...? Love to hear 'em... thanks.
Lots of changes this season...inhale/exhale...patience everyone please.
MMfan, your post is just too precious...wouldn't it be great to have Murray and "Goldie" as regulars, I think those two could have their own show...they do have the "button pushing" down to a science! LOL
I liked the music in the beginning because it sounded like some of the old music i really liked. SC is getting better and she may be a bit too low of a voice but she is very good. I loved seeing wilson that much and the fact he was like the main charachter of that episode and all the little wilsons there will now be. It's just a little bit worse for me than what it used to be but it is still a good show.
I waited anxiously for the new season to find out how Flower's legacy would continue without her. The Whiskers is a large unit that we had to expect would break up after her death; there was a time that they were having a hard time as a single unit trying to find enough food for everyone and did split for awhile. So, I fully expected to witness Flower's family splintering into smaller, but successful units. I was looking forward to watching as the daughters formed those new families and how the new matriarchs would carry on Flower's lessons. I am sad that Mozart didn't have a chance to raise a family; she was such a great little friend and I always thought she would do well as the matriarch of her own family.
But, all that being said, I am so disappointed and disinterested with the show after two episodes. I have never written to any show before last week's first episode. NEVER. And, I'm a "newbie" to this type of forum. I work in Marketing and I know that viewers vote by turning a program on or off. I am hooked on MM and have been since the first time I watched it. I came late to MM in Season 1 and watched the Meerkat Marathons to catch up on the story. It's the only program that I will watch any episode at any time if I find it in the program line up. I have found a connection with these little guys that I can't rationally explain. And, I've gotten numerous family and friends hooked on the saga just by talking about an episode with passion.
Like many, I signed the petition last week. And, I posted comments to the main program area to express my growing disinterest in the program because of the narrator. Yes, the narrator is the "voice" of any program and brings it to life... they are the storyteller and we all know good ones and bad ones. We are experiencing a bad one.
I hope the producers are reading all of these postings, but the only thing they will really "hear" from their loyal viewers is the drop in viewer numbers. And, Advertisers will listen when viewer numbers drop also.
And, a voice-over can be changed quickly and easily; that's easy! The story writing probably isn't as easy, but I think Sean would bring his special touch even to a bad script.
If you really want to have your voice heard, I ask loyal fans to "vote" your heart with me and not tune in June 20. Let your voice be heard by a drop in viewership. It is a big sacrifice and if you decide to go back to MM on the 27th, that's okay. But it's a peaceful protest that might turn heads. We need to let the producers know; they've ripped the heart and soul out of MM and we don't recognize the program any longer.
Thank you for reading this posting and please consider what the producers will think if we all join together and stop watching for one week.
Interesting proposal, but the folks here are the hard core fans. I doubt many would tune out they are too attached.
But, the numbers are already down according to some other threads on the board.
Are there any same musical themes other than the upbeat commercial break theme? In past years there were themes for Daisy and Mozart and the wonderufl foraging pup themes that sounded a bit like a parade march or the intro to Indiana Jones.
And me if you want the real story go to the Friends of the Kalahari Meerkats website.
I'm totally enjoying this season. I must say I am one of the few that like the new direction the show is taking. To me, season 3 was just too sad and was getting boring. Just my opinion folks.
I love and will always love seeing Zaphod. Murray vs. Goldie is priceless. Wilson and Sophie, how cute was that, he runs away and then returns. Great stuff, and looking forward to this Friday's show.
Yes, TeaBag, there are some nice things on the show, but the ratings are tanking and it is obviously not the members of chat "not watching".
As stated above, a boycott would probably never work, no matter how much sense it would make to get a point across. We will watch no matter what. It seems that only the "faithful" are watching and we are seeing why the show is dying a slow and agonizing death and we just want something done before MM fades into the sunset.
If the show was nearly as successful as in the past, the point would be made that we were all just flapping our gums to hear ourselves talk and moving the wind around. Ratings speak volumes and no matter how much we want to put our blinders on and be "good little viewers", it will not help the show.
I did enjoy the interaction between the kats, but there is so much lacking...the little parade theme, the personal feeling with the kats. I adore Rocket Dog and Maybelline is the bomb, but I just feel removed after two episodes, and the gap is not closing.
I think the level of emotion shown over the narrator issue just shows how import the narrator is to the show. I think we all need to be respectful, put I hope the producers and AP seen the passion that is involved here (and the fact ratings are going down).
I think this episode sets the table for a bunch of other storylines (like possible pregnancies, Whisker rovers now leaving the Aztecs, Wilson's adventures). I like that content, but have to admit the narration makes it harder to follow. Someone suggested watching episode with closed captioning and I will try that.
I really enjoy the meerkats. I think the whole look at their society, how they survive, their challenges is fascinating. My family and I dont just watch because the meerkats are "cute". I think the social complexities are compelling. BUT (here we come back to the narrator) the meerkats cant talk for themselves, so the narrator is kind of their voice. Sean Astin's "ever objective" style almost allowed the meerkats carry the story. Stockard Channing seems like she is out to show how good she thinks she is. She is not the star of the show.
Let's put out our opinions with passion, but be respectful.
I've deleted comments by several posters - if anyone has anything to say about the actual episode - storyline/scenery... that would be great.
Otherwise... we can close it. There are plenty of existing threads on the main forum on which to air complaints about the changes this season has brought.
As was suggested - the blog has been designated by Jason as a place producers are following. Also viewer_relations@discovery.com...
FKMP is not affiliated with Animal Planet - they have their own site.
The thread devoted to "Boycott June 20th" hasn't been deleted. It's been closed. The "idea" is still being infused into multiple threads - those posts are not being deleted.
Take issue with the moderation of the board: kelly_moderator@yahoo.com or take it to the top: viewer_relations@discovery.com subject: Forum Moderator: Meerkat Manor.
If there is nothing specific to add regarding the actual content of Friday's episode... please post on the Main forum.
Thanks tons. And please pass the aspirin.

I don't mean to be disrespectful, people are only talking about FKMP on this site, because this is posted on FKMP's site:
"The producers of Meerkat Manor are concerned that the information on the life stories of individual meerkats that featured in their programmes is being released before the programmes air, detracting from the impact of the series. For this reason, we shall delay the posting of information on the three groups featured in Meerkat Manor until the latest series has aired, when the previous six months’ information will be posted as usual.
The Friends of the Kalahari Meerkat Project apologise to the regular visitors of this public page for this change in policy, due to recent events."
Get over it people. The contracts have been signed, They might have a chance to change back next season but I doubt it. It's the meerkats that are important. I don't care who talks through it.
It was wonderful seeing Zaphod's rover coalition. I'm glad he has a radio collar full time, too. And I hope the yellow mongoose and some of the other animals that share the Kalahari with the kats make regular guest appearances. I absolutely love this season so far!!
One thing that caught my eye in the second epis- ode was the great camera work! The camera picked up on the impish look in Wilson's eye (let's face it girls, he is good lookin' chap); not to mention a possible budding romance. The music seem to fit the moment. Zaphod is definitely the Sean Connery of the Manor. It is as if Wilson is doing his best not to get busted by "007". "Out of the mouths of babes"...it seems that the two young viewers hit the nail on the head con- cerning the issue of Ms. Channing. I recently watched some episodes from Season Three and com- pared it to the first episode of the Fourth Sea- son. Ennunication is a huge problem, reading in low tones it yet another. I bring this up be- cause I currently suffer from some hearing loss in both ears due to a severe sinus infection: yet, I had no problem understanding Sean. This made me think about those individuals that have some hearing impairment but not enough to warrant a hearing device. It is extremely FRUSTRATING!! During the first episode I asked my husband (numerous times) what did she say. For that reason and others, I say, thank God for Kalahari Confidential!! The issue with Ms. Channing is not a popularity contest but rather does she have a gift for "story-telling" and can you undersstand or hear what she says.
You know, I think it's good that folks are voicing their opinion about the show. I hope that people who don't like Stockard as narrator are basind it on her delivery, etc. since she can't do much about the script and we have to face the fact that Sean is not going to be narrating any of S4. If the majority don't grow to like her as the season wears on, I'm sure they will find someone else next season. I agree with pronker that there was too much sky and some use of the same footage in succession. I do feel we need to keep this constructive so we can help AP prduce better episodes, not just slamming the narrator or AP without offering a reason.
I like Stockard ok, but I would also like to see Sean brought back in the future. Since she knows very little about the show, it might be hard for her to really get the right delivery at first.
Bottom line, I still love seeing the meerkats and I'm glad that Zaphod has a nice story line going. I don't think they could ever replace him since he's got such a distinctive look to him.
I really enjoyed the 2nd episode other than the narration, but I wont even go there.
Other than them saying that Sophie is Rocket Dogs sister which we all know isn't true, Sophie is the daughter of Mozart whos' Rocket Dogs sister. That along with them saying this Wilson is the same from the Mozart story again a lie we know he died a few months after Mozart was killed by a bird of prey not a jackal. I must say that Wilson is either changing in and out of meerkat costumes or they used footage of 3 separate meerkats. (Watch the ever changing dye marks: shoulder to tail base to mid back and rightside back to shoulder)
I honestly believe that there's a group of writers in a room coming up with storylines for a soap opera and then the cameramen are told what footage to try and film.
In previous seasons I would always get so involved in the story as told by Sean and never really noticed stuff like that but with my boredom of the new narrator I've been paying more attention to the actual meerkats on the screen as I drown her voice out. I think I'm developing meerkat ears, closing out the noise and that's what I'm referring to with the narrator she's background noise.
Back on the subject I LOVE ZAPHOD and I think he's lost without Flower and just trying to make sure that all his kids and grandkids are doing ok.
I'll continue to watch each week because I'm there for the meerkats and my love for them. While I would love to have Sean return us boycotting the show isn't gonna help and will probably end up hurting the meerkats and us in the end.
