First so afraid Juno was going to die out there alone.

Then, I was never fond of Rocket Dog but when I saw her dying I couldn't stop the tears. I was so happy to see that she survived. But now I've read on this site that she was killed by a truck after filming!

The Commando's infighting was horrible. I think that was the worst part of Meerkat life I've seen. Even worse than pup-killing.

How long until the next season - do we have to wait a whole year again???

dear, mojavebyrd,

i'm currently reading another meerkat forum and there are rumors that there might not be a 5th season. i'm still reading it though so the rumors probably aren't true.

Yes I'm still out here and I just got back from reading some of the spoiler posts.

To hear that Rocket Dog had been hit by a car saddens me in more ways then one. After the death of Flower and Mozart, my daughters favorite became Rocket Dog and Nakita. I don't know what to do right now because my daughter thinks Rocket Dog is OK. If there could be any good news is that Sophie(Ella) is the DF of the Whiskers now and I think that's great.

Back to topic on hand; I loved seeing three episodes back to back. I was glad to see Rocket Dog come back after getting bit. It was disturbing to see the battling of the meerkats to see who will win Nakita's hand(paw). I hope Miles wins because I like him, but I hope Baker is going to be OK.

I can't wait to see Season 5 if there is one. I sure hope so.

I'm re-watching the episodes now and to see Rocket Dog just breaks my heart. Juno is so sweet to stay by her side. Axel and Mitch is also by her side, how loyal is that? Flower would be so proud. I wish Mitch would rove a little, he would have great pups.

Can anyone answer this question: Did the researcher intercede and give Rocket Dog some medication for the snake bite? They she had been bitten during filming and they did catch it in time, I was just wondering if they did something to her?

We get effected by watching the program, but they are right there, thank you researchers for really putting yourselves in harms way (that snake could have biten one of the camera people as well)

My family and I really enjoy this show and our wish is that they keep filming so we can enjoy the little darlings for a long time.

PS: I really don't like going on the Spoiler chats. Even though they give out good info, I would rather not know in advance, however, I did ask the question, so thank you jowkat for letting me know.

WebDeb11, thank you for your thread, it was wonderful to read and I love your pix. I only wish I could go, but your thread was so good I could see my self there.

RocketDog13, I'm a night owl as well. It's the only time the house is quiet. With three kids, two dogs, one cat and a husband, it gets a little loud, right now, it's so peaceful. I agree with you, thank you animal planet, my family and I love this program and look forward to next season.

the researchers say on the meerkat video's that they don't interfere with what happens to the meerkats but i think that they might have given rocket dog antivenom. a bite to the head from a puff adder would have killed her for sure, plus she was running around so much.

I've read that also and I've also heard them saying they don't interfere, but I can't see Rocket Dog surviving that bite. It looked like she got bit on the top of her head. This could very well effect her brain as well. I'm not vet, but can meerkat's really survive that type of bite?

dear cynthiagilman,

my house is almost always quiet. sometimes it is kind of noisy though like when my cat starts meowing like he caught a mouse. he usually does catch a mouse though. (a toy one thankfully)

My husband takes the dogs out to a field every evening for them to run around (Dalmation and Great Dane), I get presents from them all the time and what they bring me are not toys. They look so proud when they cough up a baby rabbit or chipmunk, but it grosses me out really bad. I wish they were toys, but I'm not that lucky.

Back to the snake bite; I think so too. Especially since it was right on the top of the head. Look at Flower, she had the same bite around the same spot, but she didn't survive. I know they say they don't interfere, but it would be interesting to know(we may never know) if this is what they did. They may have not wanted to have the same outcome as the end of last season. Though you have to admit how ironic that both DF at the end of each season, had the same plith.

Woww, a 3 episode night! I hope thats not a bad sign. Are they eager to just get this season over with and call it quits?

So much to write about. where to start!

I think Wilson may have taken the crown from our dear Carlos. He's getting quite the reputation ;p I think he should have stayed with Sophie. They would have made a wonderful couple ^_^

Wasn't little Juno just precious! as was Pickles, chips and flash ^_^ I adore pups. I was so happy to see Rita finally take SOME interest in the pup and rescue it from the hawk

The last episode though was by far the most tense. I was so sad to hear abut Zorro, and I thought it was surely over for Poor RocketDog. She lives through it though! But I guess it's pretty much common knowledge now that she IS in fact dead D= Poor RD, bless her little soul.

That's one thing that kind of annoyed me and possibly lead to the shows dwindling popularity. The show is like a year behind real time, and everything that's happened since filming is easily accesable to those who know where to look. defeats the purpose of watching.

If they do a season 5 at all, they should definitely keep all this info to themselves.

It was also really wonderful to see Zaphod still going strong after all these years. He must have outlived not one but two or even THREE generations!

Just can't get over the closing of the final episode. It was beautiful and sad. RD really mustered all her strength to get her family to a safe and stable burrow.

I really think Sophie has it in her to be the next big leader too ^_^

Rest in peace Zorro and RocketDog D= we'll all miss you both Frown

RedFoxTail; Yes I agree, they really should not have a spoiler thread. I had never clicked on that thread until tonight, however, I did ask the question about Rocket Dog, I just wanted to know if she died because of the snake bite, I was instructed to go to the spoiler, I did and that's where I read about her death. I truly will miss her. Now I have to tell my daughter, this one too will be just as hard for her to take as Flower and Mozart. At least they died during taping, Rocket Dog died after the taping, so this is my dilema; Do I wait for next season, or tell her now? My husband and I have always prided ourselves in honesty, but I don't know what to do here.

RocketDog13, sorry for leaving w/o saying good night. I fell asleep at the computer. I have a laptop and can use it while sitting on the bed(wireless connection). To answer your question, there was a small message in red on your screen when you clicked to confirm, it said that you confirmed your membership. You wouldn't have been able to log on here if you didn't confirm. Your OK now.

My animals are funny. My dogs feel so proud to bring me back presents, however, my cat is such a princess. She won't touch anything that I won't touch. She clean and won't get dirty at any cost. I think we traumatized her when we gave her the first bath experience.

After seeing "The Darkest Day" for the 3rd time, I see that Juno really loves RD. He is so dedicated to her. Rita was too young to give birth I think. RD put her grieving aside to expand her family, what a great leader. A chip off the old block if you ask me. Like mother like daughter (Axel and Flower). She knew she had to expand her family or lose it forever. She choose to expand. I ony wished that she hadn't exiled Wiley Cat. Her pups would have been a great addition. I think what helped out is maybe because they all had the same dad (ie; Wilson) she could smell that on all the pups (maybe). What a good girl.

The producers do know how to creat drama though. Showing that collar and saying "The manor has lost another great leader" then telling us it was Zorro (not RD). Even though we will miss Zorro, my family started crying because we thought the hawk got a hold of RD. You producers scared us there. Rest in peace Zorro, you will be missed. With that said, I hope Miles wins out, I really like him. Nakita needs someone with a tough exterior but a heart of gold and that's Miles. I hope Baker is OK though.

I love all the new pups; Juno, Flashman (where did they get this name?), Pickles and Chips. Very cute indeed.

Wilson come back, it's time to grow up and stay with the Whiskers Group. He is a little lover though (just like Carlos). However, I think Wilson lost her true love in Mozart. Remember he stayed by her side for the last time last season. Maybe that's why he can't stop roving. Maybe it's time for Axel to step up and become DM with the Whiskers. After all, he can mate with RD (or Sophie). Mitch needs to rove. The manor could use some of he has to offer. He's a great meerkat.

I'm going to sign off for the rest of the night now. Blessed be all of you and talk to you all soon.

Of all the pups, Juno is my favorite. He was able to let out cries that were loud enough to alert his mother. Maybe it alerted predators, but he's still ALIVE.

Sophie did well to have 3 pups in her first litter. Now, she's watching over the whole group as Rocket Dog's successor. She's the one I would have picked, too. She showed dedication to the little ones as well as leadership qualities. All this out of a relatively young meerkat. Pardon me for shouting, but WAY TO GO, SOPHIE.

I hope we get to see more of Sophie as a leader. I have loved her since before I knew she was going to succeed RD. Somehow, she stuck out in my mind.

I had to wait til this morning to post. I loved having the shows together. The commercials didn't seem to last so long.
Rocket Dog, you were a brave one. Strong like a Whiskers should be. I was so proud to see her trying to move the group when she was in so much pain. The body of the whole over the body of one.
Those of us who have known that Rocket Dog dies in real life, not Meerkat Manor world, know how hard this last epidsode was going to be. Again, seeing one is such pain for the last time is a lasting memory. Our Sophie, Ella in real life, is another strong leader. They may be small in number, they may have lots of splinter groups, but a Whiskers is a born leader. You could see that in all their little faces.
Long live our meerkats. No matter what group they are part of they all have a story to tell.

Brilliant indeed...I could not have asked for more..Of course, silly that I am, too many memories came forward and my tears began within minutes of the first episode's theme...lasting well past the third episode.

I saw them all: Flower, Uncle Youssy, Zaphod, of course still with us, Shakes, Mozart, Tosca, Lenny, Squiggy, Bubble & Squeak, Blossom, who of us will ever forget Blossom, and many, many more of our beloved meerkats and manor families...they were all with me tonight.

Will this be the end of an era? Let's truly hope not, but it was an exquisite ending to Season 4; Sophie and Wilson, ah love, the images of Rocket Dog's agony, while difficult to watch were, to use the word again...brilliant and thank God her story, true to life. The lone empty collar of Zara( Zorro), heart breaking...Juno with Rocket Dog, our Axel to the rescue...oh my so many new memories...

Meerkat Manor has been a life changing event for me in so many ways. Not to worry, not to be posted. A show of this magnitude is rare indeed. I am so glad and proud it was part of my, our, life's experience.

We can only hope it will continue in some form, in some manor...somewhere.

For those who don't know, Juno is Ella/Sophie's grandson. Rita was actually her daughter. When I heard that, I didn't believe it at first, but when I checked out the family tree, it was true. She couldn't have been too much older than 1 1/2 when that litter was born. Yet, she handled it well.

All animals, including humans, grow at their own rate, emotionally speaking. Rita wasn't quite ready to have her first litter, but with Rocket Dog and Sophie helping her care for Juno, I think he's got a good chance. Thankfully, after a while, she showed some interest in helping her son. When he got left behind, I thought he was gone, but luckily he was making quite a commotion and his mother heard him and came back.

I fell in love with Sophie this season. When Axel fell asleep on babysitting duty, she was there, but the rovers kept tempting her. She kept going against the grain, but the family needed her babysitting abilities. She wasn't about to settle for the life of an SF. She worked hard, but she finally ended up as a DF and is most likely very happy and comfortable in her new position. If I were Sophie, I know I would have acted in a similar fashion.

I hope Zaphod is okay. I know that he is pretty much at the end of his life expectancy, but there was a meerkat who lived to 13. Good luck, dear patriarch of the Whiskers/Aztecs.

Good luck, Whiskers Smile May your new leader be just as successful as those who have come before.

Let me start by saying that I loved the 3 episodes done back to back.

I couldn't help but cry when R.D. came out of the burrow after the bite. I knew previously she had been bitten but it was still heartbreaking to see just how bad she actually looked.
I also felt that it was incredible that they showed her family sticking by her as if they were working in shifts, unlike what was portrayed about Flower that she was just left there by her family. I always had a hard time believing that since these meerkats always show such affection towards each other, and this episode proved it as they stayed by R.D. side.
I absolutely loved all the footage of the pups and could watch them for hours. It was so precious to see Juno hugging his much younger cousins, talk about a kodak moment.

I also loved seing Zaphod and how much he appears to be enjoying his grandpups. Although he did appear to look alot older in last nights episode, I guess running off rovers has taken a toll on him. Loved the comment about Maybelline being a daddy's girl it was very cute.

The rovers episode had me laughing more than once especially when Mitch toppled out of the tree. I too thought that Wilson(HR) and Sophie made a very cute couple and the fact that Philipe had his own lady katin Wiley Cat I was hoping they'd all stay together.

Not to upset anyone but I just wanted to put this out there. Wilson is not the same Wilson from the Mozart storyline, he passed away from TB 4 months after Mozart died.
The Wilson in this storyline is most likely Homestar Runner who's the brother of Philipe. I believe he also passed away from TB and if you rewatch the episode you will notice that there's a big lump on the right side of his face (signs of TB)

Regarding the snake bite, we must remember that Flower was older, pregnant and not in the best of health which is why she probably died from the bite where R.D. was able to survive it. It breaks my heart to think that she suffered something so devastating and horrific only to survive the bite and shortly there after she's killed by someone driving a car. I guess in the Kalahari the meerkats are equivalent to squirrels here in the U.S.

Also R.D. gave birth above ground during season 3 the pup didn't survive, then she had Nugget and Beaker I believe in December 2007. Then in March 2008 she aborted again so the storyline with Rita was let's say artistic licensing on the Producers part.

I'm so hoping that there will be a season 5 although so many of our favorites from this season have also died since filming ended.
Like I've written so many times before I would love if they followed even more families in a season 5 especially since so many original Whiskers are now members of other groups or have started groups of their own.

I know that the Whiskers were originally chosen due to the size of the group, with so many members there would always be something interesting going on. Now with the groups being so much smaller the Producers may feel that they wont be able to get enough footage to make a season.

I also feel like Janelle and I spoke about earlier that they may feel the magic is gone with the deaths of so many of the fans favorites especially the number #1 in all the Kalahari and that would be Flower.

I've enjoyed reading everyone's comments on this thread. Season 4 was truly wonderful despite my reservations when I had first seen the "Don't Judge..." advertisements. These last 3 episodes were nothing short of amazing and provided us with a truly special evening to end the season (and hopefully not the end of the series).
I have cherished every moment of Meerkat Manor from the very first episode until now. Even though Flower will always be my true love, I hold a special place in my heart for every meerkat. I have watched Flower's progeny grow and spread throughout the manor leaving their own individual legacy in the sands of the Kalahari. What a blessing to be able to be a part of this.
I found the last episode the hardest to watch this season. Seeing Rocket Dog's beautiful face all puffed up brought me to tears immediately. Since I knew she would survive I was better able to watch what seemed like an unimaginably long segment of her in agony. But I couldn't help but think of my Flower and all the pain and agony she must have endured only to die. I only pray she could sense the presence of some of her loved ones around her during her last moments.
On a happier note, I am absolutely in love with Juneau. What a doll. While I was truly saddened that Rita killed RD's pups I was overjoyed that Juneau was kept safe and that our Sophie has shown herself to be a DF in the making. What a superstar she is.
The chaos over at the Commandos was something to behold and I was amazed at this incredible footage of Miles and Baker duking it out - not to mention Nikita joining in as well. She is one tough kat. I'm crazy about her.
I'll miss Zorro. I hope his pain ended quickly. He's with his mama now and so is our sweet, courageous Rocket Dog. Bless her soul. She was a wonderful DF and did her mother proud.
I can only hope that we will get a Season 5 but if we don't I am grateful for every episode we have seen and completely indebted to Animal Planet and everyone behind the making of Meerkat Manor for bringing that special Desert Rose into my heart forever.

QueenFlower, I can add nothing here, you have said it all; my heart is full of love and hope for the future generations of Flower's children's children. It was so hard to see RD in such pain, but who could not be moved or inspired to see that tiny animal with such powerful strength and determination to protect and lead her family. Knowing her fate did help me get through the painful pictures as you say. Seeing her become a Kalahari Queen in her own right helped even more.

What can be said about Nikita? She is obviously not going to sit about and be the spoils for the latest victor in the fight for dominance! That struggle was incredible to see. And she deserves her crown as well.

Last night was like being able to watch another entire movie about our shared passion. I will treasure it while awaiting the next season.

Long live the all Queens of the Kalahari -
and the brave males that follow them.

First, I apologize for my previous post. If I had the proper permissions, I would delete it myself. I have a rather New Orleans-ish view of mortality and death, but that does not always translate to an acceptable response in the view of others. Rest assured that I love those kats as much as anyone here.

However, I must comment on cynthiagilman response to my post. Exactly what part of my little fictional story would have been so horrible for your daughter to read? If you found my little fiction so objectionable for her, I certainly trust that you did not let her watch the last episodes that featured Rita killing and eating Rocket Dog's pups as evidenced by the “blood on her mouth” as the show put it. Or Zorro’s radio collar laying in a tree with a hawk nearby with the narrator intoning that “the radio collar is all that is left of him and the Kalahari has lost another leader.” And please tell me you protected her from a full half hour of a swollen and suffering Rocket Dog struggling to survive when few of us would have bet the house that she would make it.

So yes, I apologize for my post, but you sure as heck should apologize for yours as well.

And with that I will returning just reading the posts and not contributing to them.

Given the reality that RD did meet her demise by being hit by a vehicle... I deleted the post - simply because - it just wasn't going to be well received.

Thanks for your understanding...

mod_kelly - Thanks for the delete. It certainly wasn't meant to offend.

RD13 - I don't think that the death of a kat is ever acceptable, but I can see your point in a 'circle of life" kind of way.

I am not sure what frustrates me more though, a kat meeting his/her end on the road or having to be euthanized because of TB. That one really gets me.

So, in the grand scheme of things, I would rate an "acceptable" death on this scale:

1. Natural causes/predated
2. Car/truck
3. TB

Thoughts?

I hope Zorro didn't suffer, either. Seeing his collar in a tree made me feel sad, even though I had heard what had happened.

While I didn't want to see those images of Rocket Dog in obvious pain, seeing her after she overcame the toxin made me feel a tiny bit better. However, that was tempered by the fact that someone carelessly cut her life short.

I know that a lot of meerkats died between the filming of this season and now. I don't know why, but I always seem to check the spoiler board. No worries, I'm not going to reveal who is gone or how they died. If you really want to know, please go to the spoiler board and read the "Response to season finale" post. Thanks Smile

As I said before, last night Zaphod looked kind of tired. I know his age has to be catching up to him, but he still keeps fighting onward.

It seems there are a lot of people still reeling from last night. I'm doing ok, but that's because I knew ahead of time part of what would happen, and had more time to process the information.

Take care, everyone. Hopefully, we'll be able to discuss future episodes at a later date. For now, let's work together to deal with all of the events of this past season, and the pain associated with them.

Where does everyone hear that this might be the last season? I have heard that the ratings for MK Manor had dropped this year but it still has a big fan base and still is one of APs top shows. I am hoping that this is just a big rumor that is circulating.

BTW I think that if a MK has to die then getting hit by a car is the easiet way than contacting TB or getting ate by bird. I hate to think and see them suffer in any way.

I know - I read a while back that there may not be a 5th season. I'm hoping that's wrong. Viewers have been known before to bring back tv series. If enough of us ask for it, maybe we could, too. I think it would be very hard for a lot of us to never know what happens to the Whiskers and the others. I really need to know what happens to the pups named Pickle and Chips - I smile everytime I say those names!

HI RD13. I haven't been on much for the last months so I haven't said how much I have really enjoyed this season. The filming was fantastic. The desert was beautiful. It has been great getting to know all the new MKs. I even started getting the same thrill of guessing what would happen the next week.

I am still hoping that they will incorporate more groups. That would be just more MKs to love and get to know. I really love that they did bring in more group this year but we need to meet them all if possible.

The only thing that bothered me was that I found out that RD died at the first of the season so I kind of made myself not get too attached to her.

Anyway, RIP RD you were loved and will be missed.

i love pickle and chips too! they are just so cute! i read the forum page on the whole no 5th season thing and all it was is someone's dad read it on some fake website or something like that. the show just has too high of ratings to be cancelled like that. i hope that there are more groups too. also, in season 5 sophie will probably be the dominant female and if she is i hope wilson will settle down and be the dominant male in the whiskers mob.

It was an ingenious idea that the last three episodes were shown together. They were great episodes, like most of them this season (I have a problem with the one featuring the heroic babysitter Simon that never existed). The FKMP LH reports were followed almost religiously.
Rocket Dog was honored by presenting her struggle, and her overcoming the ordeal (she deserved it), and at the same time the viewers were prepared for a change in leadership, with Sophie/Ella as a candidate.
Unfortunately, a lot of the kats that we saw passed away in the meantime.

Rocket Dog was a surrogate mother to Juno, after she lost her pups, and he seemed to love her. Rita/Amira, Juno's mother was one year old, inexperienced, and slightly indifferent. It was devastating to see RD bitten, bloody, and swollen, and a reminder of her mother's tragic story. It was a long, drawn, painful struggle. RD's family was with her (how touching), including little Juno. It was obvious that the Whiskers loved her, and respected her. RD survived the ordeal, and didn't lose her dominance. This showcased Sophie/Ella's character, as well. She didn't take advantage of her sister's dire situation. MM finally admitted that RD was a true heir of her mother, but not before accusing her of being responsible for the group splits (which are normal when a DF dies, and the group is very big). She was a strong lady; she managed to walk to the burrow, and scentmark the subordinates, in order to prove her dominance. Unfortunately, the image of a swollen, and clinging to life RD (we all know her fate after the season filming ended) will remain with us. Stockard Channing uttered the prophetic words "RD won't die here, not now".

Sophie was presented in a positive light, since she is the new DF. She was Wiley Cat's companion in exile, she lead the group during burrow changes, and RD's ordeal, and she respected RD's leadership. The viewers were prepared for a change in dominance, with Sophie/Ella as a capable candidate.

Wiley Cat appeared as if she was crying after she lost her litter.

The two rovers that were presented as companions were brothers in reality, Wilson/Homestar Runner, and Philippe. They unsuccessfully tried to join the Whiskers, and the Aztecs. They were a great team of rovers. Wilson/HR was the father of Maybelline's, and possibly RD's, not to mention other Whiskers ladies' pups. This was the last time that we watched HR, since he passed away at the time frame of the episode (February 2008).

It was shocking to see Zorro/Zara's radio collar on a tree. There was the implication of a predation by a bird. Zara was a tough dominant, one of Flower's sons that didn't leave any offspring behind. Nikita/Zorilla was not too fond of him, but during the ensuing ruthless, and bloody dominance fights between Miles, and Baker, the two younger Whiskers brothers in the Commandos, she favored Miles by attacking Baker herself. This was an incredible scene. DFs don't normally interfere in such fights.

Zaphod is, and looks older, but he is still the DM of the Aztecs, along with Maybelline. The group, although small is doing very well.

Meerpups, I personally do not believe that AP
and MMs writers set out to lie. The meerkats,
Mother Nature and God write the scripts by vir-
ture of natural behavior of animals, weather
and human beings. I understand the road RD was
on is well traveled by the locals and not
just the reseachers etal (who, I am sure,
are just as careful as they can be).
We live in a rural setting and the road in front
of my house is used as a shortcut between two
major streets by everyone, including the local
constables. Most EVERYONE drive in excess of 50
mph. We've lost several cats to these drivers,
a number of raccoons and squirrels, too. It is
really gut-wrenching. I cannot begin to count
the tears I have cried or the swear words I have
screamed at them; and, my poor DM has to bury
each and every one of them. The hardest thing
for him, though, is to have to come in and tell
me one of my babies have been run over!
Can you imagine how hard it is on the people that
have worked so long with these precious babies?

i live in a middle of nowhere kind of place and so the few cars that do go by my house think that they can go as fast and reckless as they want. i find so many dead animals on the road.
and, its always hit-and-run. Frown
