Someone did a post asking why they don't feed the meerkats a little extra egg and prevent them from starving. My thoughts on this are: I don't think they should do that. To do so would interrupt natural selection and could also introduce diseases. I don't want to see them starving either, but I definitely do not think that human interferrence is the answer. Overall, meerkats are a very successful species. They are not endangered. If they were all saved from starvation, eventually there would be dire consequences for the species as a whole. It is very sad when they die, sadder still when they are starving to death. Really sad when we get to know them and love them. But IT IS NATURE. They aren't starving because of anything that people did - if they were then I would have a totally different attitude. They are starving because they live in a harsh desert and that is what happens to some of them.

I was not aware of the practice of dominant female Meerkats eating subordinates pups. As has been said before, they live in a harsh environment and I guess any kind of unusual behaviour like that is not surprizing. As someone said earlier, I don't think I could be a part of that study and not offer some kind of help or assistance to these animals if it meant I could help save one from starvation or death. I just could not stand by and watch it happen. I guess I could never make it as a researcher.

Poor Kinkachu! The DM and DF of the Starskies are dead and poor Mozart is not being allowed back into her family. I can't stand to see the meerkats starve to death in the cold! What a hard way to die! Kinkachu did have blood on her paws for killing mozarts pups though. Mozart has been through a lot and it would have had a silver lining had she been able to return to the whiskers. Poor Lola looks pathetic after Punk took over. At least Zaphod was willing to give her some loving!

Rewolf4 - sorry my reply is late. I've been too depressed to get near this discussion board. On one my first visits to the KMP website at the beginning of the month I stumbled on a report of the Starsky. It reported the death of the DM and gave a number of group members as 3, stating that several of male members of the group abandoned the mob. I wish I could find it again for you.

I saw a preview for the October 26'th upcoming Meerkat Manor show for this coming Friday. During the end of the preview which showed a terrible fire going on, the announcer said there would only be two more upcoming episodes. Doses that mean the end of the show completely or just this seasons end? I hope the show continues, but it does not sound good. Does anyone know anything further regarding the show's continuance?

I also read about the October 26, 2007 episode titled "The Graduate." I know Mozart is going to die, from an attack by a jackal. I shouldn't write this stuff because I don't know for sure. I'm just preparing myself for the worst.
In "Three Degrees of Separation" the most powerful image that remains in my mind is Mozart at the very end, curled up in her dark burrow. She looks back at the camera for a second. You can tell she's cold. And she's alone. She holds her head up for only a moment, as if she senses these are the last images she will ever see. It is disturbing and painful. She is so alone. She doesn't deserve this.
I will watch the episodes Friday night to make sure my memory is correct, and to see if Mozart dies.
Mozart has been my favorite because she stands by her brothers and sisters and comforts them in times of pain. None of the others have done that.

That's only the end of this season. I believe they are already filming Season 4. I think MM will be around for awhile.

I understand what you're saying. My point is this: if Fluffernutter can be given extra egg to prevent him from starving, then why not Kinkajou? Why one and not the other?

hey sabacat,
i've changed my name to trazom4.
no problem about taking a while. i've been away for a while myself. I guess males do leave, although you would think at least one would stay, to step into Carlos' privileged place. But if Kinkajou was ill, they may have sensed that and left even sooner than normal.
Here's meerkat hugs to everyone during this hard season.

I'm sorry, I botched up the quote system. There are several other posts I can't find that answer your question, but the Starsky no longer exist. Carlos died, and only 3 females were left, Whoopie, Kinkajou, and Mozart. Whoopie was lost in the desert, and Kinkajou died from illness/starvation. At the beginning of 3 Degrees of Separation Sean Astin tells us the Starsky were ravaged by illness. So by the end of this episode only Mozart is left.

Poor Kinkajou. I felt so sad seeing you so thin and weak. I know many of us said some horrible things about you when you killed Mozart's pups. I don't think I did, although I thought you were foolish to do so and I felt sorry for Mozart. But I hope and pray I did not say anything wicked about you in this chatroom. I don't believe you ever were wicked, just doing what is natural to a pregnant DF. And I am sorry you lost your babies, too.

The meerkats have taught me a lot about themselves, but also about human beings. I would to share four points from this and previous episodes that I learned about life in general
Mozart is the sweetest, most gentle, kindest and most compassionate the Kalahari has ever seen.
When Mozart lost her pups to Kinkajou in a previous episode, I wanted her to stand up to her tough sister. She did not and was right to, because sometimes we must take seemingly harsh treatment from our superiors, and yes Kinkajou WAS the boss already, and we must just grin and bear it.
If Mozart fought Kinkajou over this event, she would have been kicked out of the Starskies or she could have just left of her own accord. She did not, because pups come and go but to the meerkats, a family group IS the most important thing, not individual pups. Prioritze the most important things in your life and you won't go wrong.
I believe that Mozart had a legitimate beef with her sister. If she wanted to fight her on it, I suppose she could. She would also probably lose. But even if she did fight her sister, under no circumstances, should shenever, ever have killed her sister's pups. And of course she did not. My point being, no matter how unfortunate the situation you face may be, you never, ever hurt innocent life or those who are innocent of any wrongdoing.
Thank you for letting me get this off my chest.

Is anyone getting messages every once in awhile that they can't enter this community because their IP address has been banned? I have. It's really frustrating. I don't know what I would have done to be banned. Umm I would post this elsewhere but I'm afraid that with all of the trouble I've been having, it won't let me, so I'm going to seize the opportunity now. Thanks.

zerocharismo - I have had no problems other than the site being a little slow sometimes, but I have seen others post that they sometimes get those messages.

I am not sure if this is the right thread for this,but... a few weeks ago there was a commercial about the meerkats battling a squirrel. Was this a joke, because I never saw it in an episode and I don't think I missed one. Thanks!

lj29 - I think that was an old commercial from when Daisy was a little nervous and the ground squirrel scared her. Maybe they were trying to lighten things up a little.

That's the episode that aired a week after the episode where Flower dies but the squirrels never appeared in it.

I agree MBAL...but for somewhat different reasons. These meerkats are habituated. That means that they do not see people as a threat, and will allow people to follow and even pet them. However, there is a massive difference between habituation and domestication. Once you feed a wild animal, it becomes domesticated. It comes to rely on human assistance for food. It ceases to find any food on its own. Would the researchers step in again in a few weeks? And again, even later? Until the meerkats simply ran to the researchers each and every day in order to get their necessary food? It's sad, definitely, but not all of it can be helped. I understand why people wish they were still alive, but they are wild animals. Key words being "wild" and "animals." The latter meaning that...they will die at some point. To ensure that that happens only as a result of age, would be to put them in a zoo.

I felt so sorry for Mozart when she was chased off by her own family. The ones she helped raised, loved and cared for. They show her thanks by chasing her off. And when Kinkajou died that was heartbreaking. I feel so sad and it hurts to know that alot of our favorites are dying. I hope they all rest in peace. Mozart is my favorite and has been since season 1 first eposide. I watch Meerkat Manor every time it comes on t.v.

I find the show very emotional and congratulate those involved in making an entertaining show. Allowing nature to take its course is difficult to watch at times. I get very emotionally involved and feel more sympathy for the Meerkats than i do for the Chinese people and their destruction of their own country and people. China is a lot like we were 100 yrs ago and they are destroying so many of our living creatures for their aphrodisiacs(spelling?).

Poor Mozart! Just when I thought she was finally gonna get a break. I bawled when Flower died. And now this! I am stunned and so saddened.
