I am 23 I have been dating my boyfriend for almost 5 years - we broke up in feb. and i had a really hard time dealing with it but we saw eachother on and off and tried to work things out for months - then in july he said he missed me and we were back together. but he just told he needs his space to regroup and just sees this as a break. anyway i am dealing with it ok but my mother and my entire family really has never really liked him - now my mom is making comments like he is such a loser and you should regret your time together - i feel like i want to cut her out of my life - you shouldn't say things like that to your daughter! besides i see us getting back together again in the future! then what is she gonna say?

My family used to love my boyfriend, until he started with the on-and-off stuff your boyfriend seems to be doing... and now they hate him.

I can understand where you're coming from, wanting them to accept him, but they (more specifically your mom) probably doesn't for their own specific reasons. Maybe instead of shutting her out of your life, you should try talking to her and asking her why she says stuff like that. Maybe she knows something you don't... maybe she just doesn't want to see you get hurt? Tell her you see yourself getting back together with him, that you love him, and that it hurts when she says stuff like that.

If your family can't except your BF, then that's their problem. I do agree with one thing though - if he ditches you and then comes back to you, ie "on and off", doesn't it kinda make you feel used? It's as if he's saying you're not good enough, oh wait, yes you are, wait, no you're not.

My mum and dad don't seem to like my BF either, even though he's been the best. We actually see each other outside of school and social events yet my parents only grudgingly let him over, because of a few mistakes - ie I was late home twice, and by 15 minutes.
