Mac, wouldn't you agree that the M1 Garand was one of the most influential rifles ever used by the American Military?

I do, and I would not call it one of the most influential rifles ever used by the US.

The M1 was more of a transitional weapon in the timeline of US small arms. That being said, it was a very good rifle, better than what was being fielded by anyone else at the time. But by modern standards, as a combat firearm, it's obsolete.

Didn't we have this conversation before? Smile
The M1 is obsolete, yes. But still a classic!

It is still an excellent rifle, although dated. I still wouldn't want to have someone who knows what he's doing with one shooting at me - and if a needed a weapon, I wouldn't cry terribly if that was my only option (there are far worse options even among more 'modern' weapons), especially if it wasn't a CQB situation.
I don't own one right now, but purchasing one is high on my wish list.

Get it now!!! and invest in a reloading kit with .30 caliber dies and holders! You can try the CMP or a local dealer.

While it's an old gun I could see it being a very good DM rifle if they were short of M14s.

The problem with that is the way a M-1 is loaded - you can't put a scope in the standard location (directly above the action). In WWII and Korea, they offset scope mounts to the left side of the action, but that still makes using the scope and rifle much more difficult. You can't have a proper cheek weld, the rifle's balance is off, and the aim point is modified.

Agreed. I have witnessed a guy whom made a modified scope mount for over the top of his M1. His thought was to hand feed it one round at a time. He did not take into account that the M1 throws brass up and to the right with some force behind it. The spent brass kept hitting the scope making it impossible to set the scopes zero.

Nope, the M-16 Rifile was the best. it crossed the vietnam war, the first desert storm/ shield, and iraqi freedom too and it's upgraded variants are still in development to make it even better
