When I was younger (about 18-20 years ago) I remember watching some of Jane's specials with Flo and Flint. However, I remember another chimp that touched my heart... Her name was Molly Long Face. I can't seem to find any info on her here. I was a child then and may be thinking of someone elses work, or maybe looking in the wrong place. Does anyone else remember her?
Hi this response comes from Erica Metelovski at Chimpanzoo:
I believe you are referring to Olly, one of the females Jane studies at Gombe. I have attached a picture from which you can get a pretty good idea of why Jane named her Olly Long Face : ) One of Olly's most distinguishable features was a goiter on her neck (common in the area because of a lack of iodine). The goiter was relatively small when Jane first wrote about her in 1961, but in a few years it became quite swollen and prominent. Regardless, Olly was a favorite of some males and had a number of children, including Evered and Gilka. Evered was highly interested in becoming alpha male and won conflicts with Flo's son, Figan who was slightly younger. However, Figan managed to form an alliance with his brother Faben and gain the top position.
Olly was quite shy and timid and spent most of her time away from the group. Though she was friends with Flo, the dominant female, when Flo's children became older and began vying for dominance over the females, Olly even avoided Flo. Olly's daughter Gilka was very active and playful (she loved to pirouette through the forest!) and would often initiate play with other infants. Olly would let Gilka play with Flo's daughter Fifi, but as Fifi could be "tempermental" and typically got what she wanted because of her mother Flo's position in the hierarchy, Olly limited their contact. As you probably know a mother of high rank will defend her children who can often get away with bad behavior because they know their mother will support them in a conflict (really not so different that bratty human children!).
Olly disappeared in 1969 and is presumed to have died. There is an excellent video called "People of the Forest" that has some brief, but great footage on Olly and Gilka (shows her pirouetting through the forest). I believe the film was taken by Hugo van Lawick. The video should be available through National Geographic.
