For about 2 months now, I've been training at a new place, I was doing Brazilian Ju-jitsu but the class wasn't making money.

So anyways, I now am at a new place, and learning more stand up fighting, than the ground game. Anyone else just get into stand up?

I've been loving every minute of it and really trying my hardest to learn the jab. I never realized that a jab was such a hard punch to throw correctly. Throwing it and getting it back.

Tonight was the first night where I finally learned why you keep your hands up in sparring. First off let me tell you my background, I sit 5'11 bout 140 lbs, and I was sparring with a guy 5'11 200+ lbs. It started off light till I landed a solid rib kick. After that I knew my time was up. He threw out 2 jabs, in which I blocked away, but what I didn't do was keep my hands up...He followed the 2nd jab with a hard hook. Right on the nose.

Needless to say, for the next 10 mins I had a bloody nose.

So this is kinda a reminder for those new, and old.. always keep your hands up, and don't chase. This was the first time in my life I've been actually dropped with a punch too, so it was an eye opener. Good times, still love every minute of it, and can't wait for wednesday to come.

Anyone else have any sparring stories? =P

LOL, yeah you've gotta keep your hands up :P

I do taditional boxing, though. And I have a cute little story:

Few years back, my instructor paired me up with this one guy for a tiny sparring match. This was my first time sparring with a guy so I was a bit nervous about getting my butt kicked.

So we were in the ring and I totally took the first round no problem. Then I realized that this guy hadn't even gotten a contact hit, he was purposley(sp?) going easy on me. In the beginning of the 2nd round I decided that I would make him fight by beating the crap out of him Razz

So I was just puching every inch of him, and he saw that I wasn't letting up so he fought back! However, the damage was done and I had won the match. So afterwards I went up to him and started interrogating him with all these questions like 'why wasn't he actually fighting?' and stuff like 'Is it because I'm a girl?', because it's not winning if only one person is fighting. And while I'm viciously questioning him, he's just standing there watching me have a fit(I was like 16).

So what he said next made me feel like such a jerk. He said to me,
"I didn't fight back because I really like you and didn't want to hurt you. And I was also wondering if you wanted to go out sometime?"

So we dated for a year and a half, and he was the best boyfriend I ever had. Unfortunatly, he moved to Wyoming. But we're still great friends Big Grin

Very romantic story nikki. Letting a girl I like beat me up seems to be a great way towards making a loving relationship Wink

As for my sparring stories, I think my might seem a little familiar. Indeed, for many years i had read posts and articles stating how form fighting and real fighting were very different from one another, but I truly realized this concept when I first sparred w/ someone in my Kung Fu class. I was very nervous and my mind was racing. I knew all of these moves and techniques, and practiced them to pefection in the forms, but never had i used them against a real resisting opponent before. I choked up, and found myself being tagged several times.

Now, I practice my moves with more of a free flow mentality. My stances don't have to be absolutely perfect and my techniques don't have to look clean and pretty. As long as they can cause damage, the move works.

One night while on leave in Japan my friend and I were bored and decided to go spar. Being that we didn’t want to destroy the room we had got we went to a nearby park and went to town. We had no gear so were just going for contact and technique. This probably explained why the few people who walked by were staring so much at the two gaijin who were barefoot in a clearing at 2300.

While much of the fight was blur (I was too busy to take notes) I do remember two incidents. One was deflecting a jab with my left hand from my buddy who tried to crossover with his trail hand. Instead of retreating I pushed forward and caught his trail hand punch, pinning both his arms to his chest. I stopped the right straight to his face about a millimeter from his nose.

About thirty seconds after that he caught one of my jabs, pulled me into a picture perfect aiki-jutsu wrist lock and round house kicked me in the temple.

We finished bruised dirty, tired as hell and with no clear winner, which to me is the best kind of spar.

And Cinite, you're absolutely correct a kata perfect form isn't required when applying a technique, but make sure to practice sharp, so when things are moving fast and things get messy, they aren't TOO messy.
