I noticed you don't see OCC in many commercials anymore for 7/11 or Lugz. I don't see nearly as many people wearing OCC or Jessie James apparel like I used to. I also used to see lots of cars with OCC and West Coast Choppers stickers etc.. Along with the cancelations of Monster Garage and Biker Build Off and the Milwaukee Iron shows I don't see American Chopper getting the heavy promotions on TLC I used to see on Discovery Channel about three years back. Anyone else notice this?

I see quite few peeps wearing Occ stuff but I see more wearing West Coast Chopper stuff. I near really saw from 7/11 or Lugz. I haven't seen the promotions on TLC like use too since they redid your lineup in shows this season.

I just don't see reruns of American Chopper going over well on another network. Rumor has it Spike or something.

Board is f ' ed up. Can't sign in & post. Anyhow, what's new? What I was trying to say is the MC shows have been stale for 2 - 3 years now. The dancing shows are current and saturating the air, the singing shows are old news, and the lose your life in the dangereous Alaskan wilderness shows are on every channel. No one talks about the new OCC shows. The big board topics are LAST YEAR'S news that Vinnie was unappreciated and poor Cody was Screwed, Blued, and Tatooed!

I think the bike/car builder shows are at the end of their life. I predict Overhaulin is in it's last season and AC is got maybe one more left if even that.
The bandwagon has left. And the majority of people who watch the shows are leaving with it. Which is good...cause now there will be a lot of nice bikes and cars to be had for cheap in about a year or two when they unload them and move on to the next big fad.

Some schools as Windman has mention offer a welding class. Some of them may also offer auto and/or motorcycle repair. Both would be a good start to get some basics. You may also check into some youth programs for such things as well. Your area may offer something along those lines. Also a long shot may be finding after-school employment in bikes shops. Grant it, because of your age, you may have to wait until your 16 because of safety reasons. Also you may not be able to actually work on the bikes because of age too, but it will get your foot in the door and you can learn things as you go along.

How to get started in the 8th grade? Find a bike shop and ask them how you can get started now. At your age, many shops would be reluctant to let you in the work area(OSHA/Insurance company etc).

For down the road...

Take any type of mechanics courses you can. Doesn't matter if it's motorcycle oriented or not. Anything you do to improve your understanding of mechanics will be a plus. Learn how to use as much computer diagnostics as you can. Learn some body and fender skills as well.

If you think you might want to have your own business, consider a basic accounting class.

Now if you want to actually design and build, not just repair, take a course in geometry and physics. The NASCAR school here in NC as well as the community college auto/motorcycle tech programs all require conceptual physics.

Learn how to TIG and MIG weld from someone that really knows how. See if your community college offers a course or two or three. Big Difference between learning from a pro and Billy Roy down the street. Lots of welds that look good really aren't good.

Also, make a point to spell correctly and use proper grammar and proof read anything you write. Employers want people that can write and speak correctly. The auto/motorcycle tech programs here also require a course in expository writing so take your school writing assignments seriously. TV likes to play up the stereotype of builders and mechanics being foul mouthed and uneducated but don't buy it.

The days of being able to get a job based on "I can't write a coherent sentence but I can fix anything." are fading fast.

I don't think this is the place to seek reliable vocational counseling. Check your local school district for programs that offer mechanical or welding training and give them a call. They may not be back again until September, but as least you'll get factual info.. BOCES is a New York program; do you live in NY? You have to identify the equivalent in YOUR state of residence. Maybe your parents could help you to do that.

What is Q.L.D? If you like metal working fallow your Dreams. Metal Working will help in a lot of different fields. Not only fabricating Bike. You can do art and other things with Metal.

Knowing how to work the metal is important, especially if you wanted to build your own frame, or add decorative details to the bike.

Back to the original topic. CMT has a series called Chopper Challenge. I saw an episode this week and it was pretty good. Not all the foolishness of OCC. No screaming, profanity filled tirades, broken doors, town clowns, trips to someplace for inspiration, etc. They even had a guy from Miller Electric explain the benefits of a new Miller welder.

Billy Lane and Paul Cox are co-hosting a show called "The Next Great American Builder." I don't know what channel it is on (or going to be on) but there is a website you can check out.
