One of the photos posted on the Japanese ICR website under the heading "2009.2.05 Sea Shepherd commits further criminal acts at sea" appears to show a crew member on the Japanese vessel pointing a rifle. He is prone on the prow of the vessel with elbows on the deck holding what looks like a rifle.

Here is a link to the picture

Does it look like that to you?

Probably, he is holding a rifle. But it doesn't look like he is going to aim it at helicopter. Whalers do use rifle to kill a whale, if it doesn't die instantly. Also, if whalers were lying about not intending to harm SS crews, why would they take the photo?

Anyway, SS should stop whining about whalers trying to attack them. The best solution is just don't go to antarctica. They call the show 'Whale Wars' and they still whine about LARD and stuff like that. lol

Looks to me like he is steadying a camera, or maybe holding a radio to his head.

Looks like a rife to me after looking at it close up, but I don’t think he was going to shoot at the helicopter.

Really?

After your comment I looked closer and I would be willing to bet he is holding a radio to report on any small boats in front of the ship. His right hand is too high for holding a rifle, there is no indication of any stock or barrel extending past his right hand. And look between his body and his right arm, you see a light yellow color just the same as the glove on his right hand, just what you would expect if his left arm is braced aginst the gunwale crossing in front of his body as he leans on his arm.

I know the Japanese whalers are inherently evil and probably have anti-ship cruise missles hidden below decks for those really tough whales. But don't you think the SSCS would have posted hundreds of pictures of the whalers pointing a gun anywhere near them and immediately issued a press release to the world?

Stop sniffing the glue and get your eyes checked.

I would tend to agree with the radio comment. If he was holding a rifle I would expect him to be tracking the helo with it, not waiting for it to cross his line of fire.

I go along with a radio held in a yellow gloved hand. Nice catch on the left hand glove, DrNuke; it was hard to spot!

Also don't you think that if the man was holding a rifle out in the open like that, that we would have seen footage shot by the helicopter? This photo shows the helo about to pass right in front of the guy. This is the kind of thing that the SSCS would have loved to document if it were true.

Was it you? Is that how you know?

I never said anything of evil; I even said I didn’t think he was doing it to the helicopter. But they do have rifles for slowly making holes in whales.

No need to get snooty it’s just an opinion. You say radio then fine.

It looks to me like he’s holding a vial of virulent contagion he is preparing to deploy into the Southern Ocean to kill every living creature in it! Thank God that SSCS Helo is there to stop his evil machinations!

Whatever it is, saying the man is pointing it at the Helo is absurd on its face.

OK I agree with DrNuke. That is a good explanation. No evil intent on my part.

Me Bad.

I'm not sure what he is holding, but it definately doesn't look like a rifle to me.

Slight correction - The holes the rifles (or bullet) puts in the whale isn't slow by any means. The projectile is actually moving quite fast and the hole is made very fast as well. I guess during your drunken slaughter of roos your vision was a bit "off" to notice that bullets travel pretty darn fast and they make holes pretty fast too.

It's a radio. Also, it is the NM not the YM, so there would be no reason to have a rifle up there for killing whales. If it was proven to be a rifle, that would be very bad news for the ICR and they probably would have taken the picture off their site.

Please note that this post was put in the form of a question to signify uncertainty. The amount of sarcastic vitriol and insult generated really amazes.
