I was fliping through the channals and I saw the commercial for rebuilt. I love how it talks about how they help disable people become mormal again. I though that it gave my a reason to never give up in life and to continuet on. I love the song that went with the clips in the commercial. does anyone know what the title of the song is?

rustybear2,

What is normal? What defines a normal person? Does having two legs mean you are normal? Does an amputation automatically disqualify you from being normal? I believe that all people are unique and nobody is normal. Everybody has their own problems, some different than others. I try to be myself and not prescribe to what society say's is "normal". We are all special and unique. Is anybody really "normal"?

It is only my opinion, but I believe everyone has their own "normal" life. When a traumatic situation happens to them, in rustybear2's case, the loss of her leg, in our case, the loss of our little girl and the loss of my husband's right leg is a traumatic event which TOOK THE "NORMALITY" OUT of our lives. Don't you think each person has their own normal?? You can't say everyone has the same normal. It is an individual place and thank God it is or we would all be just alike.
Like I said, that is only my opinion, but I believe in it.

What is normal? its the ''whats expected, the what should be, the way its always been,'' being listed and looked apon as normal till people see me with out my leg on( and in the summer when my legs mechanicals are showing i see the diferance that people react to me, but the truth of the matter is thier are lot more amputees now than ever and the numbers are going up. As a whole we are living longer and surviving more things that we wouldnt of befor.
What is normal is constantly changing, and shows like this can help to make it known that this condition is becoming more the norm. The fastest way to becoming "normal" is to beleive that ''you are just who you should be'' everchangeing and evolving . AS for tring to be "normal" not my cup of tea, im quite well known for doing leg tricks(flipping my leg around till i can put a drink on the bottom of my foot..great trick for getting the attention of waitresses..)its also great fun at halloween..

rusty, you really need to get over yourself. Yes you can be normal again. You can live life as anyone else. Having an amputation is not the end of anything. But you have to have an amputation to know that. All normal people have limitations.

The truth about normal and prosthetics is very simply, there is no possible replacement for what has been lost. No matter what carbon fiber you use or computers you add. I tell my patients(yes ,I referr to them as patients as most healthcare does) that the prosthesis is a tool for negotiating their enviroment and living life as complete as possible. I have spent my life effected by legs that just wouldn't work right. I wore casts until I was five and braces all my life. I may not have missing parts but I understand pain and the inability to use your limbs. I use the memory of pain to fuel my efforts to be a prosthesist and help people who have problems just like the ones expressed in this forum. Please,if you have problems or need help find a ABC certified prosthetsist and make them work for you.

Rusty you are partly right about not being normal again. I am a left leg AK due to a motorcycle accident less than 3 yrs ago. I really thought I would just get my prosthetic leg and just take off and walk again and life would go on. But lo and behold I was living in a dream world. I was 42 and in average shape, I had to learn how to walk and do things for myself all over again. I will agree that I don't do things normally like I use to, but I found ways to do thing differently to get that same results. Now don't get me wrong my life has had its rough spots after my accident. My marriage was not strong enough to handle the changes, I fell when I tried to lift my good leg to put it over a trailer tongue and my leg shifted allowing my knee to unlock and I broke my hip on my stump side. So I have had to learn again and again how to do thing again to make my life better. I am back to work doing the same job as before, working in a auto plant as an electrician. So I am live a normal life as much as I want to make it possible. Yes I have the bad day with the leg and the pain that goes with it. And yes it is hard work and all I can do is push myself to get to where I want to be. Now I would love to see more of the grunt work with how to get the socket to fit correctly, and the different types of sockets. You can have the best knee's and foot money can buy, but they are not worth nothing if the socket does not fit without pain and chaffing. Sorry for being so long but I just need to get this off of my chest.
