For my english class we have been working on our ethnographic research papers and i've had trouble getting quotes/interviews from people because of time issues. So, i thought why not just ask you guys since i'm on this board almost everyday.
Okay so my research is on Wiccans. I'm sure you all know what that means but if not you can google or wiki it. What i need is just your opinions about whether or not it should be considered a religion. My research isn't for or against wicca, i just want to be able to show both sides of the argument. But let's keep it respectful, i don't want to lose this thread or put anything too derogatory into my paper. Thanks guys and gals!
oh and did i mention i have to write 20 pages! yikes! wish me luck, its due on the 30th
You should have started this sooner. But, from what I understand, the Wiccan religion (like most mainstream religions) based their roots on the Equinox and harvest seasons. For example, the Monks in Munich created Heffeweizen beer during the fasting months (Ash Wednesday to Easter) so that the people wouldn't starve. If you compared Ramadan, Easter, and Passover with the Wiccan's major holidays, you could show how these religions are closely related.
Personally, I don't see any reason why it shouldn't be considered a religion. Just because it's different than what you or I believe; meaning anyone of course; doesn't mean that it isn't very real to those who practice Wiccan, Pagan & Earth Based religions. I honestly only know the little that I read up on the subject, and I'm not sure what is or isn't allowed in terms of religious discussion at this forum, so I'll leave my quote at that. Good luck putting your paper together.
Is that the people who think theyre like witches and stuff? If so, someone really needs to slap those people, theyve got some issues. I think theyre just a bunch of freaks who were too into cartoons and starwars (or whatever else) as a kid and decided they wanted to be a witch.
I dont think you should put that in your paper though... lol
Heck, if Tom Cruise and John Travolta can worship "Zothar the Alien" or whatever it's name is, in scientology, then why can't there be a bunch of friggin' witches?
jeez master misfit, you nearly made me choke on my oatmeal cookie
i like what you said though.
and i like the idea of using your guys' screennames. i think it allows people to be brutally honest which is exactly what im looking for!

Well, since you asked . . . The first step here is to operationally define what is meant by the word “religion.” If you don’t take this step, any work hereafter will be unimportant. According to the dictionary, it means several things: 1. A set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, esp. when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs. 2. A specific fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by a number of persons or sects: the Christian religion; the Buddhist religion. 3. The body of persons adhering to a particular set of beliefs and practices: a world council of religions. 4. The life or state of a monk, nun, etc.: to enter religion. 5. The practice of religious beliefs; ritual observance of faith. 6. Something one believes in and follows devotedly; a point or matter of ethics or conscience: to make a religion of fighting prejudice. 7. Religions, Archaic. religious rites. 8. Archaic. Strict faithfulness; devotion: a religion to one's vow. 9. Get religion, Informal. a. to acquire a deep conviction of the validity of religious beliefs and practices. b. to resolve to mend one's errant ways: The company got religion and stopped making dangerous products.
Once we have what is defined as a religion, we can attempt to gather data either way to validate or invalidate Wicca as a “religion.” I would submit that a religion involves a God or gods that are responsible for creating and/or managing the universe. I would also submit that religion involves a certain degree of faith, as most if not all of our religious beliefs are not subject to scientific verification. If it was able to be scientifically substantiated, there would be no need for faith (which of course is one of the classic problems in religion vs. science, but we’re getting a little off task for now). As I understand Wicca, it is a polytheistic system of belief that owes its origins to Gerald Gardner, who wrote several books regarding the practice of Wicca in the early and middle 20th century. Knowing what little bit that I do about Wicca, I would submit that it qualifies as a religion. 1. There is a recognized divine element 2. There is a body of worshippers with an agreed upon set of values and practices 3. There is an agreed upon set of values leading a believer to modify their behavior in accordance to established values Of course, that’s just my opinion – I could be wrong.
