Question:
Should TS get rid of both Hildi and obnoxious Doug?

Choices:
Absolutely--they both stink
Maybe--some of their rooms are OK
No--I like their lousy taste

Both designers have the ability to produce good rooms. Unfortunately, both have produced several rooms that appear to lack good planning ... the end result is often impractical and shotty.

Doug just did a room of mine. I absolutely love it. I was really scared during the process. But it is a room I would have never done on my own. I love the way he thinks outside of the box.

"ok folks, as an Interior Designer myself, when I am able to catch the show-those 2 are an embarassment to the profession."

I, too, am an interior designer (graduate of FIT and Parsons, certified Interior Designer, Masters in architectural design, 18 years experience, not that any of that actually matters when one discusses personal tastes), and I disagree with you whole heartedly. They are NOT an embarassment to the profession by a long shot. They both have a strong eye for color and concept and when they work for paying clients, they are amazing (I have seen Doug's work firsthand and have seen some of Hildi's portfolio). What one sees on TS is entertainment (or is supposed to be entertainment), plain and simple. They started out being about what one can do for a grand, but ended up being about what kind of drama we can cram into an hour. I shudder when I see some of the things Hildi has done, have never shuddered from Doug's work, although I have thought "what was he thinking"? But remember, when you are a true interior designer (and neither Hildi nor Doug are certified Interior Designers, that is true, but they do work in the design field and have a great number of extremely satisfied clients), the process is client driven. On TS, it is ratings driven.

Everyone has a different tastes, because of their backround training that is the point of the show! I have a degree in Art History, Have done professional construction and design in the pastso take it from me these designers are calm in conparison to some. Each designer has their own tastes, you can see it in the way they dress even. When hiring a designer you have too look into their scope of work and take it with a grain of salt, that due mostly to budget constraints that not everything will come out the way you would like it to be. As for Designers they all have their own faults and praises. If you want Country, Franks your choice but if you happen to like contemporary design Hildi and Doug are excellent choices for designers. Vern's designs are excellent but All seem sterile like the Headquarters of a very high end corporate building. Kia has the biggest fluctuations in designs I loved the India inspired bedroom but would have cried if I ended up with the Graveyard/Astroturf guestroom or the battleship gray livingroom with the Camoflauge border. In the end its all a personal preference.

I agree with you on this one. You cannot compare TS with real interior designers. This is a show first, and it is for the most part to entertain the public. The designers, and I'm using that word "designers" losely are chosen for the show for alot of reasons and aren't required to have a degree in interior design. Some may be chosen for their looks, acting ability, personality who knows what else. I wouldn't hire them for just their work on the show. They would have to bid for a project just like anyone else in the field of interior design. I would also want to see the work they have done for their paying clientele.
I might then be impressed enough to hire them for my business.

Having seen Doug's work, I would hire him to do my space in a New York minute. And yes, I would hire Hildi as well, though she wouldn't come cheap! Paige Davis is having Doug work on her new place in New York.

Actually, the number of posts on this board in NO WAY reflect the number of people who actually watch the show. If YOU were paying attention to the posts, you would realize that this board lights up big time when Hildi does an "out of the box" room. That's what TPTB want - people talking. A poster here saw Christi at a craft store and posted about their conversation. Christi said that TPTB don't care what people on this board are talking about, just as long as they're responding. It's a known fact that the ratings for Hildi episodes are among the shows highest- there are people want to see what she'll do next. As mentioned above, Hildi is here to stay. If she leaves, it will be by her choice.

Well, I just hope Doug never does another prison room and Hildi never does another hay, feather, cardboard or slik flower episode. Actually, I think that Doug usually does less controversial rooms, except for the prison one, but when Hildi does a good design, I often prefer her to Doug, because his rooms are too masculine. Of all the rooms he has done, I think I like his kitchens the best. Hildi can do any room well when she does not want to be the evil Hildi.

Hildi....YESSSSSSSS
Doug.....NOOOOOOOOO

I could care less about Hildi on the show, but Doug must stay.
He is my favorite one on there. Vern is my favorite designer, but I like Dougs personality!! LOL...Ok, maybe I am strange, but I love how he handles people on there! My personality is just the opposite of his too, but I think its funny when he tells them like it is.

I voted a "maybe" in the poll, because I don't mind Doug so much a Hilde. I really can't stand most of her designs... I did like the room she did when she and Vern worked in the same house- the one where the aunt rented the top floor to her niece. But most of her other stuff... particularly stuff like the flowers in the bathroom, feathers on walls, room of cardboard... that cardboard room I just thought was... hmmm. Im' still at a loss for words. Heh.

I think that they kind of make the show. They are not my favorite designers, but I still think that they are kind of the highlight of the shows. I know the Hildi is known for her OUTRAGEOUS designs.. and Doug.. is well Doug. I believe they should stay on the show.. I like thier outgoing ideas for rooms and their personalities!

I'm one week away from having my family room done. I'd rather have Doud or Hildi than Kia or Rick anyday!!

They aren't exactly my favorites, but I would take Doug over Hildi any day. Sometimes, I disagree with his design ideas, but his 100 Grand design was probably one of the best I have ever seen, period. The last show w/ Hildi, Frank and Andrew was one where I really liked Hildi's design, especially that amazing headboard. People have their ups and downs, it's just a matter of the homeowners when it comes down to it.

To me, Doug & Hildi are probably told by the producers to do something that will get these boards lighting up.

Don't forget, when you hire a designer, they work with you to get what you want. If they don't want to do that, they aren't worth the money, as you are the one in the end paying them. As Doug & Hildi are hired by the producers of the show, they are only doing their jobs.

Give me a break..That is part of the whole problem...i.e., I am am sure that others understand that Doug and Hildi could do better!!! THEY CHOOSE NOT TO AND HAVE A "DESIGNER GOD" COMPLEX!!!!

The HO's on this show are not paying them, the budget is 1k therefore, ??? What?? They do not have to gove them a beautiful product? They are not required to take these designs seriously??

They both have a horrible attitude towards the HO's and the neighbors trying to give them something nice...these HO's are typically not the type of people who can either afford or choose to hire designers on their own, and more than likely after dealing with Hildi or Doug, never will..its just a shame that they can't do the job right even if its a reality show vs. designer show!! That sounds like a sorry excuse to me and I am offended that they seem to think their performance is acceptable for whatever reasons they have in their little minds..GIVE ME A BREAK Mad Wink Razz kevans2@houston.rr.com

GET RID OF THEM...THEY ARE RUINING THE SHOW FOR ME, and several others I know who USED to watch the show.

I used to look forward to watching Trading Spaces every Saturday night.. Not anymore. All I need to see a commercial that Hildi or Doug are one of the designers and I don't even bother turning it on anymore.

I work for an elite interior design corporation, I know what good taste and bad taste look like, and I've seen better come out of cheap department stores.

Hildi and Doug have pompus, superior attitudes and neither seem to be as good as they like to THINK they are. All they want is attention for their outrageous assinine work. What they aren't smart enough to figure out is it's getting them the wrong kind. If they really are a good as they like to think they are, they will try something someone might actually like for a change. I find it rather appalling at the beginning of every show, when the homeowners biggest comments are: "I hope we don't have Hildi doing our home."

I have so much respect for Vern, Frank, and Edward because they actually listen to what the homeowners want. They have such wonderful personalities and a seem like such a pleaure to work with; and at least act like they CARE if the homeonwener will appreciate their work. They also have the talent and the ability to obtain a very classy look on a low budget. Especially Vern.

Keep up the good work, Vern, Frank and Edward.. I would love to see your work a LOT MORE OFTEN.
