These two are capapble of producing good designs, but I think they are a little full of themselves and like the shock effect they have. Some of their designs are downright STUPID and impractical. Who on earth would have put HAY up on the walls....especially knowing that there were toddlers in the home. Really...I would be afraid to let either one of them do any room in my house...even the garage! But I guess that is what keeps the show going...the unexpected. Not everyone can be happy...that would be too predictable!

I myself love Vern. Doug and Hildi drive me crazy but maybe they just cannot work on a budget-TIME OR MONEY! From the spoiled acting personalities it seems under them to do TS-in THEIR OPINION.

I am new here, I do watch TS regularly, and I agree that hildy and doug are not following the HO's wishes. As I have looked thru the posts here I have noticed many people with very strong opinions, on both sides of the "like them or hate them" issue. I think in hildie's case most people so veamently dislike her because the designs she comes up with usually involve ruining a piece of furniture, walls or floor. something that can not easily be fixed with paint if the HO's do not like it. Ie.. Records on the wall (think of all those holes to fill), spray painting a fabric chair that belonged to a HO's grandmother, straw on the walls (those HO had children and minus the mess, that straw was a choking hazard), cardboard (trying to remove that is mind boggling), stapleing flowers to the wall, (again if they did not like it what a mess and disaster that would be). Some of her rooms I actually have liked but I am not a modern, clean lines kinda gal, so the rooms she and doug do, are not that appealing to me. Doug's rooms are usually quite masculine and sterile looking to me. But at least his rooms you can paint over.

The HO of the shows may love their rooms, but I think most people are just dismayed for them, in the event that they did not. I look at some of these rooms and think what a nightmare it will be to fix it. The other designer's rooms are not always the best in the world, but most can be fixed fairly easily if the HO does not like it. I just think TS should consider that even though this is really a game show/ reality show and not a true design show, damaging heirlooms and walls and floors is not what most people are agreeing to when they sign up.

Whatever issues you may have with Doug and Hilde, I think they are probably the two designers who remain most true to the premise of the show. That being that when you invite the Trading Spaces team into your home, you are turning your space over to them to do with what they wish, and if that means they follow a silly whim and make a ridiculous looking room, then so be it. It's a risk you take by being on the show. I think if a homeowner is just looking for a makeover of the space, and they want to be assured that the results will be something they're pleased with, their safest bet is to watch shows like TS for ideas, then do it themselves. Or, hire their own designer.

Perhaps I'm a little sadistic, but I like Doug and Hilde for the very things most other people complain about. Yes, they both have made some pretty horrendous rooms. But, at the same time, they are keeping the show true to its intent. It is nice to see a room come together in a way that you know will please the homeowner. But it's also interesting, to say the least, when a room comes together in a totally off the wall and unexpected way, and I'm reminded happily of what the show is really all about. "You have no say in what happens in your own house!"

Confused Confused Confused Confused Confused

I dont think this is very accurate. the true premises of the show is to do what the neighbors and homeowners want for their room. try watching Changing rooms once or twice you will see that the designers actually listen to the neighbors and if a paint color is wrong they do their best to change it!!!!

Big Grin You have to admit that you keep watching because you just never know what Doug or Hildie is going to create, they are really good at keeping us all guessing. I totally would do the show with either, and consider myself blessed...They are in my opinion great artist and creators...Keep up the good work guys

I consider myself to be a fairly calm individual but, after seeing the shows where Hildi is the designer, I choose NOT to watch when she is on. Her rooms are hideous. I even nick named her "Hildi the horrible" because her rooms are ALWAYS so totally ugly and terrible. I feel very sorry for the people who have her redo their rooms. I would drop to my knees and have cried if I were them. Let me list a few reminders of "her rooms." There was the dining room that she painted black and the furniture was bright yellow...ahhh! (The bumble bee room?) Then there was the fuchsia and taupe circus tent replica basement redo where she covered the room with fuchsia and taupe fabric and painted the sofas fuchsia. (lucky for the home owners the sofas were ruined after Hildi left them out in the rain overnight). How about the kitchen redo where the people said they would like a brighter kitchen and Hildi painted the cabinets BLACK, used 4,000 wine label as "wall paper" and painted only the bottom half of the beautiful wood blinds black (it looked like she didn't finish them)! The room was darker and she used no other color. Hildi, lay off the black paint and go to design school.

Aliosh,

I remember the wine label episode - the most ironic part of the wine labels is that the home owners were very religious and did not drink at all! and the friends who was doing the room with Hildi stated this several times. Other than Hildi not respecting the beliefs of the homeowners, that room was pretty cool, but then, I love wine.... This episode brings to mind the sun flower seed packets (not to eat, but to plant), and again, the friends begged hildi not to do it, and in fact, if i recall correctly, the friends spent most of the night tearing the packets off the wall, as hildi herself applied them. The part I remember for sure was that the HO's, especially the wife were very angry.
