Like so many of you, I survived this experience and learned a few things. First and foremost, know thyself and tackle this challenge as you would tackle any hardship.
At first, I tried to do all the things I thought I was supposed to do. I covered my fear by trying to make everyone comfortable with this uncomfortable topic. I comforted every well wisher with humor and strength, discussed the "situation" with family members as just another glitch that just happens and attended all the support groups that everyone suggested. What a FAKE I was. I hated the support groups. The attendees were much older and they looked at me with sadness and pity. I was angry at my family and friends for not knowing that I just needed some time to work on this "problem". It took two rounds of chemo before I realized who I was kidding and who was making me really angry. Me! If I planned to survive I had to get honest and remember how I gather my strength. I fill my strength cup in solitude. I needed to be alone and to figure out how the heck I was going to beat this b*tch. I got selfish and worked through my treatment my way. I know it was hard on family and friends, mostly my Mom. I was sad that I couldn't find a way to make her understand what I needed to do, but I knew that I just had to come clean with myself if I was going to survive.
Each of us naturally knows what we need. Listen to yourself and you will find your own healing. Good thoughts and prayers to all who are fighting. Courage is within you.
