Hello!

The footage of Lake Malawi in the "Fresh Water" episode was spectacular (especially in 1080i) . However, the scene of the Male Cichlid mouthbrooding has sent a ripple through the aquarium hobby. No one seems to know the identity of the species shown mouthbrooding in both the trailers, and the "Freshwater" episode.

A couple of other questions have also arose in discussion that I wanted to post here, and was hoping to have forwarded to the appropriate people or a contact point provided for the crew who worked on the Malawi sequences.

-What was the ID of the Male Mouthbrooding Cichlid?
-Is this an example of bi-parental mouthbrooding, or does the female not assist?
-Bi-parental mouthbrooding is a fairly rare behavior limited in Cichlids to the Tanganyikan Goby cichlids, some South American Geophagines (Earth Eaters) and perhaps a few others...However to my knowledge this would be the 1st known Cichlid in Malwawi to exhibit this behavior. Are there any formal papers or studies on this behavior in this species?

I would like to be able to pass this information on to the hobbyists in the Online Cichlid Community, so any information or contact points would be helpful.

Thank You,
Colby D.

Looks like you folks got it WRONG...

...and the BBC apparently didn't make the same mistake...
Here's the claim from Discovery's own website:

Here are some screen grabs of the fish:

The experts I have contacted as well as casual hobiests agree that this fish is a female Tyranochromis macrostoma and not a male fish...

Thanks for getting me all excited about nothing...

Sigh.... Frown

Apparently no one from Discovery itself (or anybody who has anything to do with Planet Earth actually reads these forums...

I can't believe I haven't received a C&D regarding the screen shots of the show posted on public web pages...

I wonder if a lawyer with some free time could get together a decent class action law suit in regards to false advertising....Huh...I happen to know one who is an avid Cichlid enthusiast...I wonder what he would think about it...

If you can't tell, I'm trying to provoke any kind of response out of Discovery or Planet Earth...Perhaps there is an address I write to? Why bother having a discussion forum if you aren't going to respond?
