Please forgive me if this is an incredibly stupid question or if this has already been brought up.
Would it be possible fish using large pots as the crab guys do rather than a very long string of smaller pots. Would the lobsters destroy each other in a large pot? King crabs are fairly large, possibly larger than lobsters.
Setting single pots as opposed to a long string could limit the damage caused by draggers and someone setting on top of your gear.
Of course this would require larger boats to accomodate 800 lb pots.

honestly that just wouldn't work. think of it this way, the more pots on the bottom the more lobsters you can catch. this is another example of how different the fisheries are. the crabs, from what i have seen on the show tend to move in large clusters where as the lobsters do not. spreading 40 pots in a trawl gives you a better advantage to find them. if the east end does better than the west you move it more to the east the next time you haul it etc. nice thought though

The maximum volume of lobster traps may not exceed 22,950 cubic inches.
