Yeah, that was one of the quirkier moments I have seen from Mike.
It seems that if it was done on the site of a segment, then it wasn't planned and just occurred to someone that it should be done. Not like I know how that stuff works.
Did someone call and say, "Shoot a commercial while you are there?"
Yeah, it was pretty spur of the moment, a true collaboration, as usual. But to tell you the tuth, I have not seen the aired version, and we shot three good takes. I sent to Discovery, and our buddy J.R. worked his magic to make it even more fun.
I have to say what J.R. came up with was pretty darned funny!
I was sitting on the phone with one of my DJMB buddies and all of a sudden I spotted Mike on the commercial. When he broke into that dance I almost dropped the phone I was laughing so hard.
Any chance we'll get to see the other takes? I need a good laugh!
Charlotte and I were watching and gave each other that, "Are you kidding look?" when it was over.
You guys are both crazy. Thanks for keeping us all laughing. May I suggest you two do the commercials from now on. Discovery seems to have trouble with it.
OK .. As soon as it aired last night I knew what bridge it was .. its the Mackinac Bridge here in Northern Michigan. So Dave, he wasn't up there just to shoot a promo, when is the episode going to air of Mike working on the Mighty Mac !!
On Mike's forum they've been wondering when/if the commercial will air again. Many people didn't see it the first time and were disappointed. Any idea if we'll get a second chance to view it??
Liz
P.S. On the "letter of the day" video, I was hoping you would break into a duet with Mike! Now that would be something...
Liz, I honestly do not know when the spot will air again. I'm sorry you had to see it. I was embarrassed for Mike when he did it. It was impromptu as it gets, and I didn't think Adam Sampson (our fill in for Doug that trip) was even holding the camera straight for that take.
Rethinking his little jig, Mike later said he was just killing time in between tasks on the bridge, and wanted to do a "real" commercial.
We never did any more, so I'll take the blame as producer for not scheduling in more time for another try.
Dave, I think the commercial did an excellent job at effectively reflecting the unrehearsed and "off the cuff" approach that DJ has. Sometimes it the on-the-fly stuff that works the best.
Yes, Mike was standing on the Mackinaw Bridge the bridge that connects the Upper Penninsula of Michigan with Lower Michigan. We, from the U.P. of Michigan, do not consider the bridge to be in "upper Michigan" as one subsciber noted. Upper Michigan is the Upper Penninsula.
Whenever I see the commercial (I taped it) I think of Madonna's song "Music". Sure it looks a little "poopy pants" and he's a little stiff but it makes it all so very funny.
Really looking forward to this episode that the commercial was filmed from! When I first saw it I recognized the "Mighty Mac" as we native Michiganders call the Mackinac Bridge. Traveling from the Lower Penisula to the Upper Penisula many times during my 50 plus years of living in the Great Lake State I crossed this metal marvel numerous times.
I certainly hope that the dirty job entailed the task of climbimg to the top of the towers (I assume it will be the continual scraping and painting/routine maintenance of the bridge which is the Dirty Job) and the camera men got some panoramic shots of the Straits of Mackinac and the surrounding areas.
With any luck, Mike also traveled to Historic Mackinac Island where the only transportation is by horse and buggy or bicycle and he gets to clean up the road apples left by the horses!
