Dirty Jobs is one of my favorite shows and I was excited to find an episode I hadn't seen just now, Locomotive Builders.
Now I've seen Mike in Ford commercials before and that's fine but I wasn't expecting this. At one point in the episode he comes outside and walks past a new Ford truck his crew is loading. He makes a obviously scripted comment like "We're going to drive!". Then they show the crew again loading more gear, folding up the seats and loading even more gear. Am I watching Dirty Jobs or a Ford commercial?
The show continues and then as they're going to break there's one of those factoids like you see on Modern Marvels. It's impressive statistics related to the topic - this one about the men doing the blasting on the locomotives. It was interesting until you read to the end and it says something like "these men need a High Life". I forget what it actually said. It really just left me wondering are we drinking on the job now? Sure enough, then a commercial comes on for High Life beer. Are you kidding me? What happened to this show?
I sat through most of the following commercial break and then just turned it off. I didn't even realize what I was doing - I usually love this show but suddenly I felt like I was watching nothing but ads and then more ads.
It's really disappointing to think how much effort they must have spent on making sure that truck looked good instead of making a good show. I wonder how many takes they needed loading and unloading the truck until they got the camera shots they wanted.
Really?! That ruined it for you? Sorry about that, and its a shame because you missed how interesting making locomotives is! Sounds like YOU need a drink!
By the way, it was just one take, and I personally make sure the truck DOES NOT look good. This is DIRTY Jobs after all.
