Mattress Recycler - October 6, 2009

MARINE SALVAGE TECHNICIAN
In this episode of Dirt Jobs', Mike heads to Miami, Florida, to help save the environment by removing submerged, abandoned boats from out of the water. He begins his day climbing onto a barge and heading to the sunken boat. Once at the boat, Mike jumps in the water and ties a towrope to the boat. He then places a boom around the boat to catch any contaminants that might seep from moving the boat. Mike puts on a breathing apparatus and heads under the boat to find the rudder shafts but discovers that they are missing. Instead of hooking the chains to the shafts, Mike slides the chains under the boat. Next he hooks the lift bags that lift the boat to the chains and stuffs the exhaust pipes to contain any harmful objects. As the water is pumped out of the sunken boat and the lift bags are being inflated, Mike makes sure that the hoses are working properly and fills in the holes in the boat with foam. Once the water gets low enough, he removes any fish from inside the boat before towing it out of the water to the barge. Then he hooks lift straps to the boat and pulls it in pieces onto the barge where it's crushed even further and loaded into a container. Mike ends his day by heading back to shore with the boat crushed in a dumpster.

MATTRESS RECYCLER
Mike travels to San Francisco, California to find out what happens to old mattresses. He starts by picking up mattresses from the side of the road and from people's homes and then loads them into the truck where they are taken to "mattress heaven." Mike unloads the truck before stacking the mattresses and taking them to the recycling center. At the recycling center he cuts the mattresses open and rips them apart separating the metal, fabric, padding and wood so each part can be made into a new product. Mike ends his day out of breath but happy that he's helped make the San Francisco area a more eco-friendly place to live.

TOILET CRUSHER - October 20, 2009
Alligator Snapping Turtles
In this episode of Dirty Jobs, Mike journeys to Dota Creek, Arkansas where the endangered Alligator Snapping Turtle population is monitored and studied. Mike begins his day attempting to put on a life vest and heads down the creek to traps that were laid out the day before. After pulling up several empty nets, he pulls up a young Alligator Snapping Turtle and learns how to handle, measure, weigh, tag and test the sex of the turtle. He then releases the turtle back into the wild and heads to the next trap. Mike finds tiny leeches on one of the turtles and places them in a container to study. Finally, he ends his time in the creek holding a turtle and saying goodbye.

Dirty Nuts & Mike Pranks & Prods
Toilet Crusher
Mike heads to San Francisco, California to a building that is being demolished so he can help remove the toilets. He starts off in the bathroom unbolting the toilets (some full, some empty) from the wall and moving them to the center of the room. Once all the toilets are off the wall, he carries them down to the trailer. Then, Mike takes the toilets down the road to the recycling center, where he uses a sledgehammer to break down the toilets and remove all metal, rubber and plastic components. Finally, Mike scoops the toilets into a large machine and takes them over to the crushing machine where the toilets will be ground down to small pieces that can then be reused.

CAMEL RANCHER- October 27, 2009
Mike makes his way to Ramona, California to one of American's most interesting dairies where, instead of working with cows, he learns his way around a camel. Mike starts his day leading the camels to the milking parlor where he attempts to obtain the milk in a limited time frame- all the while trying to avoid getting kicked. After tasting the milk, Mike takes the camels out to the pasture to feed them and perform a health check on the herd. He learns that burnt motor oil helps to heal the cracked pads on the camel and he applies the oil to the pad before moving on to inspect the camel's toes for any sign of infection or injury. Mike discovers that a camel's temperature can fluctuate depending on the weather. He then takes the temperature of multiple camels in order to establish a baseline temperature of the herd. Then he changes the halters on one of the camels before trying to get the camel to lie down so he can sit on it. Next, Mike helps encourage the camels to make babies. Mike ends his day at by blowing the dust out of camel fur before taking a painful ride off into the sunset.

I am watching the episode as I type this and I'm shocked. You didn't mention the poo! You talked about the extra weight of a mattress being skin cells, but you neglected to mention that it is also composed of dust mites... and... you guessed it.. Their poo! Makes it that much more disgusting, doesn't it?

Thanks for all the entertainment, Mike and the crew!

    Mike and your staff,

I've seen yall do some gross and crazy stuff before, but going over the edge of a perfectly good skyscraper to wash windows was the over the top. The whole time you were scaling the side into the bosons chair my legs were numb. That was nuts...

I've never really taken the time to comment on any other show, but that blew me away-WOW.

Camel episode was a lot of fun. Only a few really gross parts. I felt so bad for Mike when he was riding the camel- looked really painful!
