I can not say what I think would be my most saddest one is. A lot of them are. But, I have to say that Annemarie Lucas woke me up.
I am bipolar, but for years, I went undiagnosed. I own 2 cats, and had two dogs. Annemarie Lucas and Animal cops woke me up to not only what I was doing to myself, but to my beloved animals. The dogs are still alive and they went to good homes.
Here's my story in a nutshell.
During the undiagnosed time in my life, I would go days on end without eating or caring for myself or, as it turned out, my animals. I didn't care, I had the means to care for them. I had food and water, but I couldn't pick myself up to make certain they were fed and had water. Really the only time they would get food and water, we had a large self waterer and (dog) self feeder, was when my boyfriend would come home off the road, on the weekends. I couldn't even keep house.
I started watching animal precinct and cops. The first Animal Cop I saw was Annemarie Lucas. I don't remember the show, it might have been the one with the mama cat and her kittens, and I believe it was a fire, or she had been set a fire. It really doesn't matter. But the episode and others woke me up. I gave up my animals, for the time being. I couldn't afford to get the treatment I needed, and although, I thought the animals would help, they didn't, and I was hurting them, and myself.
At the time I was living in Arkansas. Medical care there is not the best for those who have no insurance. I knew that if I couldn't get the treatment I needed, then there was no way I could care for my animals. I gave them to someone who could.
I now live in Iowa. Thank God they have a better health care system here. I have recieved that treatment, I have been diagnosed, and now I have to beautiful cats, whom I adore. I wouldn't trade them for anything in the world.
I thank God everyday for Animal Planet, Animal Precinct and Cops, and above all else, Annemarie Lucas. She literally saved not only my animals' lives, but my own. I wish I could send Annemarie Lucas a letter letting her know this.
Oh, and btw: My animals do have health care here, thanks to Iowa State. I would not have been able to afford it, if not.
