In this episode of Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom, discover the truth behind some of the weirdest and most wonderful creatures in the animal kingdom: the anteaters, sloths and armadillos of the Amazon rain forest.
Ask Peter Gros — special adviser to Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom and co-host of the original series — your questions about anteaters, sloths and armadillos now. He'll answer them shortly after Amazon Claws, which premieres Sunday, April 30, at 7 p.m. EST. Get a reminder.
It's always nice to chat about one of my favorite places in the world, the Amazon. To this day I'll always remember my first trip and the golden hues of the sunset over the canopy of the Amazon rain forest.
iloveanimals321 asks: "Dear Peter, I have a question about anteaters. I will like to know how many teeth they have."
That's a good question, wondering how they ingest those thousands of termites each day as they're feeding. But actually, anteaters have no teeth at all. The anteater rips open the nest and termite mounds with its big, clawed front feet and then uses its two-foot-long tongue to take its prey. The tongue is covered with minute, backward-pointing spines and sticky saliva, to which the tiny prey adheres. The remaining termites repair the nest and the anteater will return another day for its delicious source of protein.
Hi Peter! George here from KS2004! I love this episode - my mom went to the Amazon a few years back and had a great time. Someday I hope to go there too!
I was wondering about how sloths sleep. Staying upsidedown in the trees, do the actually hold on while asleep or do they balance by their amazing claws?
