While, i dont mind the calculated and carefully attempted hunting and consuming of animals for survival, but sometimes this show is very unrealistic! I mean if u can eat the flesh of a bison in the chilling snow, why does Bear rip its eyes out and eat that? Also when u can walk around a wall, why does bear climb it?

It's this sort of nonsense.
On the " stranded on an island" episode, bear teaches us to build a miniture raft and sail out to sea. Honestly that is probably the most stupidest thing you can do because if the chances of you surviving on an island are 10/100, the chances of surviving on a stupid little raft on the high seas are about 0.000000000001 / 100. You'll run out of water in about half an hour, you'll finish ur food in about 5 hours ( thats if the sharks dont get u first). The crew boat finds bear in about 10-20 minutes. Very unrealistic!

Ya I agree some of it is unrealistic, for his present situation... but it would be impossible to make every lesson he teaches perfectly fit into the time contraints of a 1 hr show.

For example the bison. There may not be much other than eyeballs and scraps leftover from a bison carcass after wolves and and other scavengers are done with it. Bear is showing the eyeballs are indeed edible.

Building a dinky raft is stupid?? I think not. You've been stranded on an island for months, and you notice that every other day a freighter ship or 2 passes within a few miles of the island. Always the same route cause they use shipping lanes. A ship will never see you on the island so you gamble with a raft and put yourself in front of the ship..sounds reasonable to me.

So bear giving some rudimentary raft building instruction is not stupid at all.

I can go on and on.. but you get the idea. Everything bear demonstrates has value, given the right circumstances.

Actually the Bision was killed by a tribal person he met. nevertheless, i do agree with your opinions.

Yea if you see a ship go by once in a while its good to bet your chances. I was talking about if no ship went by. Here you have to admit, the last thing you wanna do is be on the open sea, and the worst thing you can do is loose sight of the island.
What bear teaches is good, but under most circumstances its impossible to do what he does. Like using a vine to get down a waterfall- its a pretty big chance to take isnt it?
I also saw i an episode he eats out of dead carcasses of animals-- if infected they could be the last thing one eats.

ya mike I would agree, unless you have a darn good reason to venture off the island it would be best to stay put.

But that would also make for a pretty boring show. Showing Bear sitting on the Beach waiting to get rescued.

I think they show us mostly extreme options to help save yourself, first for the entertainment value, but also those extreme options are sometimes all you may have left. So like I said they do have value.

I’ve seen Bear build simple rafts to get downstream on a couple episodes. All things considered it’s probably not a good idea but you could make the argument that in a specific situation it would be plausible.

However, building a seaworthy raft to get off an island is a whole other story. First consider this, Bear didn’t actually build the raft on that episode but rather it was constructed by a team of 5 or 6 people over the course of 10 days, using power tools and supplies from Home Depot. So if it took 5 people 10 days, it would take one person 50 days at a minimum. Replace the power tools with hand tools and you would double or triple that time, so now we’re at 100 days (nothing but a small knife and you could double it again). You’d spend another 60 days, minimum, just making enough proper cordage, because vines just aren’t going to take that kind of stress over an extended time. Now consider that in a survival situation you’d be spending at least half of your time just on day to day survival issues, gathering wood for fire, purifying water, finding food, etc. One person, alone on an island, with nothing but a knife and with no premade materials would never be able to construct a raft like that in less than a years time.

Besides, if you can see ships then ships can see you. Three of anything is the universal sign of distress. Build three fires at night, spaced a good distance apart. During windless days you could add green vegetation to your fires to create three columns of smoke. It might take awhile for someone to notice and come to look but not nearly as long as you’d spending building a raft. Staying on the island you’d have food and shelter and could potentially live indefinitely. Pushing off on a raft you’d basically be crossing your fingers and hoping the currents carried you towards the shipping lanes rather than away from them because on the raft you’re only going to survive a few weeks at best.
