I have done the internet search on this, talked to the Fitz of Orlando with no satisfaction as to the cause. This is one time I wish the E-Vets were still taking questions and responding to them.
I rescue miniture pinschers for one of the groups listed on Petfinders (IMPS). I have placed over 30 dogs at this point in time. I am still hopeful that my two diabetic dogs will find a forever homes one day. I digress--I lost two min pins five weeks apart as quick as a snap. At first, I was told an infected anal glan was the problem, then Parvo--then after a discussion with the vet here he made mention of HGE after the second dog died. This second dog had the same bloody discharge and lasted until 8:30 that evening. She also had a sub temp of 96 degrees. I was told probably bladder cancer. My Dr. Friz opened her up and came up with this HGE thing. I thought I was going to start losing dogs every five weeks so the other seven would be gone before summer's end.
From what I was told and read there is no known cause or cure. It can be helped with mega antibiodics and fluids--similiar to treatment for Parvo. I wake in fear almsost everyday that another animal be gone before nightfall. When the simptions appear it is too late for a positive outcome.
I knew it was not the food I fed them, Innova, and homemade chicken soup. These deaths came in the middle of the dog food scare.
Has anyone else heard of this, any way to predict who will get this, any cause, or any new treatments? I have not seen this on any of the EV programs but in the local ERV is where I found myself with both dogs before their death. I am despriate for answers so I can relax knowing that the remainder of the dogs will be free of this swift moving killer.
Thanks for taking the time to read this--please excuse any typos of misspellings as still upset over losing these two--one I adopted and one had finally overcome her previous owners attempt to kill her with kindness allowing her to balloon up to 29 pounds;she was a very nice weight of 16 lbs 6oz. when she went to the Bridge.
