So we all know urine glows under a black light, and I've noticed dust does too. But what else will glow? Are there certain characteristics that make something glow?

The property that allows something to glow under black light is fluorescence. Inks and paints used in psychedelic posters glow under black light, as well as certain minerals. Sometimes teeth and fingernails glow, and certain articles of clothing that have special ingredients to make them very white under normal light. Google ultraviolet light, as this is not a myth, it is a general knowledge question. Ask your English teacher the meaning of the word myth.

I'd still like an answer if anyone has one. I am well aware of the word Myth. The topic of this board is SCIENCE and Myth questions. This would fall under Science. And, if it is a general knowledge question, then give me a knowledgable answer...what you gave was fluff to make yourself look intelligent...

Fluorescence is the key word. An item absorbes the untraviolent light and re-emits the light at a different color.

I gave you a knowledgeable answer. You asked what could glow under black light. I gave you some things that glow, or fluoresce under black light. If you go to Google or Ask.com and run a search under fluoresce, you will find more information about things that glow under black light. I did not give you fluff, I gave you items that glow under black light. If you don't like the answer, then find a better place to askit.

Wutz, salut.
mommytoboys, I apologize if you felt put upon. There has been an influx of new people here who do not know what a myth is. I cannot give you a total list of what might glow under blacklight, I don't think anyone could, it would be so long. Welcome to the forums.

rycon, we are as nice to new people, usually, as they are to us. If someone posts some really dumb question, or asks a question, then has to argue the point when they get an answer, they will be treated with the same amount of respect they show us, which is usually none. Besides, these forums are for myths that the mythbusters might bust. We get people asking which way is up, can a bullet kill you and other things of that level. You have made 4 posts. When your indicator shows you have posted a few hundred times, you will be as cranky as some of us are, for putting up with stupidity.

Some Common Items that Glow when Exposed to Black Light: Laundry Detergent (most brands, US only) Light-colored clothes and fabrics (after they have been washed in laundry detergent) Woolite RIT Whitener & Brightener Petroleum Jelly White Paper Fluorescent paint Highlighter Pens (highlighter ink) Tonic Water (which can be used to make "sparkling" jello); its actually the quinine within tonic water that makes it glow Milk Any Glow-in-the-Dark item (note that these items get "charged" in just a few seconds under a black light) Some vinyl flooring (light colors) Mouse urine (according to http://www.kness.com) Cat urine (feel free to add your favorite mammal to this list...) Certain minerals - fluorite, calcite Rubies will fluoresce red if they have no iron impurities Fishing line (some, not all) Above taken from: http://brunell.hostrocket.com/halloween/blacklight.htm

Other things that fluoresce under black light:
Some articles of white clothing and shoes, the odd vinyl record (I saw one glow yellow when I was in high school, though I don't remember the album. It's the only such record I've seen that does that.)
I just thought I'd add these two. The actual list is so long, you'd be here forever reading it.

Also, from my past, beer, Lucky Lager, IIRC.
When in machinist school, we used to hang out at a place where it was rather like Halloween all the time. A very strange place.
They had several black lights, and the beer would glow green, like antifreeze.
The day-glow pink painted stuffed Antelope head that was on the wall did too, only not green, of course.

Is this just me does that seem like a bit of an oxy-moron to anyone else? Anyway, lordfrogenhall; mommytoboys both was quite respectful, so therefore according to your statement that means you should be equally nice and respectfull to them, but you were (in your first two posts) quite patronizing and even rude. I saw a t-shirt that I liked. It said, "I will try to be nicer if you will try to be smarter." If you will re-read the response to my answer, I was accused of using fluff to make myself look intelligent. I merely listed some things that glow in black light. I will no longer be rude unless someone is rude to me first. I was in pain that night and mommytoboys' snippy answer about fluff, just got on my last nerve. In the future, I shall go by that t-shirt. Bless you all. Oh, and p[ardon me, but I think you mis-used oxymoron. I found the ultimate oxymoron; Oil-Free Oil of Olay.

Lordfrogenhall, salute.
You ever try a solar powered flashlight?
Why, if 7-11 is open 24/7, do they have locks for their doors?
