Coke a Cola gets it name from the fact that it used ot contain Cocaine untill Caffiene was invented and used as a substitute. Coke themselves actually deny the fact now.

Coke themselves actually deny the fact now.
I don’t think they deny it, but they claim that the amount it originally contained was so trivial that there would be no real effect. That seems unlikely to me. But in the late 19th century many patent medicines (as Coca-Cola was then marketed) contained cocaine. As for caffeine, it wasn’t exactly invented then since nature had invented it long before Coca-Cola existed. Caffeine was first purified in 1819 before Coca-Cola was created. The kola nut also already contained caffeine. But caffeine was added to the drink when the cocaine was removed.

Actually, the only thing caffeine brings to the party in soft drinks is that 'buzz.' It is a colorless, tasteless liquid. If the headache you have is a caffeine withdrawal headache, then Coke will relieve the headache. Otherwise, good luck. There used to be headache meds used by the Army and available at drugstores, known as APC. This stood for Aspirin, Phenacitin and Caffeine.

It has been my understanding that Coke (the soft drink) and other cola drinks were assumed to cure headaches. The idea had sprung from a study of post operative patients in hospitals. They had noticed that after surgery patients had headaches that were "cured" after a cola beverage. Knowing that the post operative patient had fasted before the surgery and usually had the procedure in the morning, the headache would occurr during recovery. The patient would be certainly thirsty from the withdrawal of the pain meds and request a cola. The new explaination is that the cola only contained enough caffeine to clear withdrawal for coffee drinkers.

Coca Cola was originally marketed as a pain killer...when it still contained the cocaine (hmm...guess that kills the pain...amongst other things). Caffeine, though, is not a pain killer. It will only help caffeine withdrawal symptoms, which often include headaches and nausea.

Only 'cos of the caffeine I'm sure. What I want to know is why cola helps alleviate nausea.

Redbull cola imported to Japan in 2009 has been reported that it contained cocaine - minuscule amounts. It may have made it slightly moorish. Caffeine is however excellent in helping drug absorption and is included with many prescription drugs to help absorption - so if taken with a headache remedy may help.

the syrup used in coca cola was said to have been originally sold as a medicine - either as a cure-all, or as a cough syrup - rumors vary - and sold mixed with carbonated water - als said to be a general cure-all.
interestingly, coca cola DOES seem to soothe sore throats.

It may not be the caffeine but the sugar that helps the headache. After years of suffering bad headaches when I woke up in the morning, I found that the headaches only happened if I had too many sweets before I went to bed the night before. I also found that the only way to get rid of the headache was by consuming something that had a lot of sugar in it in the morning. Nothing else (asprin, coffee, other food) would get rid of the headache. I know that sounds crazy but here's my theory. I think that through the night, my body was overreacting to the sugar and actually causing a hypoglycemic (low sugar)condition in the morning resulting in the headache. I don't know if that is medically correct, but I do know for a fact that drinking Coke or consuming other sweet food cures the headache in the matter of a few minutes. .

GTCGreg you are the first person I have read about that has a condition similar to one I had for 9 years starting when I was 12. It was described to me after several doctor consulatations as "Rapidly changing blood sugar levels" in my case it got to a full blown migraine and two days in bed. Ultimately I eneded up cutting sugar from my diet for 11 years - a real pain the u know. I can know have sugar 20 years on but in essence if it is the same problem measure blood sugar levels and log it over a month regularly to get to the bottom of it. My doctor advising wife is better at the analysis than me but sorted the problem with a lot of observation. Hope this helps as I know it wrecked my life for years.

That's interesting bikerwookie. I had the headache problem ever since I was a kid but never went to a doctor about it. It took me 40 years to finally figure out what was going on. I knew I couldn't have anything sweet after 7PM or I would get the bad headache but had no idea how to get rid of the headache once I had it. It was another 10 years before I discovered that all it took was a little sugar and the headache went away. I still avoid sweets in the evening but know that if I don't, relief is just a can of Coke away in the morning. It works for me. .
