Could you guys build a small scale heat engine using the OTEC method discussed here?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O...al_energy_conversion

could you scale it up enough to power something useful?

I think mythbuster would be more encline to test myth.

Hmmm...

What does the page say?

quote:
If this extraction could be made cost effective on a large scale, it could provide a source of renewable energy...

The small magnitude of the temperature difference makes energy extraction comparatively difficult and expensive...

All OTEC plants require an expensive, large diameter intake pipe, which is submerged a kilometre or more into the ocean's depths, to bring very cold water to the surface...

So, even if it were a "myth", what on the page makes you think this would be within the Mythbusters' budget?

Sure, they *could* build a small engine that uses heat differences. But that's nothing new.

Sure, the Seebeck effect isn't quite the same as a "heat engine", but http://www.leevalley.com/gifts...0246&cat=4,104,55967
