So my mom got dress for her 70s bday. The skirt part is lace, very pretty. I'm thinking about these earrings (i need to convert it from surgical to clip-on). If not, what else do you recommend for accessories? She has short chin length hair that's why i think dangling earrings would be appropriate. She doesn't want to show her flappy arms. She is petite and a bit pear shaped with slanted shoulders (so even more emphasizing the smaller top half). she tried on a ton of dresses, this is the only one does not make her bottom look bigger, very flattering. so i'm thinking a black or red shrug with a defined shoulder to give more presence for the upper half.

Am i off base, any suggestions? Thanks!!

I think my Firefox security settings are too high. I couldn't bring up the dress or the earrings.

By your description, though, the outfit sounds really nice--the dress, the shrug, the earrings with the chin-length hair. I think it's really awesome of you to get the earrings and make them into ones she can wear. I love that so much thought is going into making it a truly special day. <3

Come to think of it, my earlier suggestion of corn cushions for the clip-on earrings might not be appropriate for this occasion. I'd go with the flex fabric bandage. The last thing either of you need is that thing falling off in the middle of dinner or something.

I think she's going to look beautiful. I hope that you and your mother both have a wonderful time!

try again: the dress.

The earrings are from ebay, if you can't see it, it's item # 110453206681.

That dress is gorgeous! With such a beautiful embellishment at the neck you do not need the earrings. Try to find a satin, cropped jacket with a bit of a stand-up collar or padded shoulders. You are a wonderful daughter to make your mother feel so special!

The dress has a Scandinavian appeal. The traditional jewelry of Norway is the "Solje", a pin that looks like the sun. There are co-ordinating earrings that are similar to the ones you've picked out. An older generation of Lutheran ladies (Norwegians) tended to avoid ear piercing, so you can usually find these in clip-on or screw-clamp style. Clip-on really hurt, but screw-clamp might work for her. Here are a few pictures of Solje (which comes from the word for sun) style earrings (technically the Solje is the brooch, not the earrings, but they make co-ordinating earrings).

Here's an example on Ebay:

Solje screw back earrings

I like these even better with that dress

They're much more expensive than what you were looking at, but I don't think they're exorbitant. Good luck whatever you do.

Oh, what a pretty dress! How sweet of you to be helping her choose a wonderful outfit too.

I'd like to second screwback earrings. Since they're adjustable, you can find ones that DON'T pinch! My grandma swore by them, and always looked so nice in the longer styles without her ear getting all sore or pulled out of shape. I think I like the slightly antique-looking earrings versus the super shiny ones, but that could be personal preference. Still, with gorgeous silver or snowy hair they'd show up just that much better!

I like the beading on the neckline.
Since she needs coverage for her arms, and a boost for the shoulders, I agree with A Bolero

as the jacket (for different shoulders, I'd prefer a cardi over.)

Consider Also: Cropped Tuxedo Jacket

I was looking for a Satin Moto Jacket for her (!), but no go.

Happy Bday to Mom!

I just found the same Tahari bolero at Nordstrom and think it is perfect for your mother's dress.

Nice work, Steph! I think the first one is too "closed" and will interfere with the necklace effect.
I like the second one; very chic over a dress.

She would have to try!
(A bolero definitely accents shoulders, but it's not ideal for a full bosom.)
