my mom got a dress that has lots of beading in the front (like a statement necklace). So necklaces are out. I think dangling earrings would be best however her ears are not pierced. She complains about pain using the clip-ons, and very worried about the weight of bigger dangling ones. For those who only wear clip-on earrings, is there any trick to reduce pains? Thanks!

For regular, "lever-clips", try small corn cushions.

If the corn cushions end up being too thick, you can also cut small circles out of a fabric, self-adhesive Band-Aid.

Also, here's an article on how to loosen clip-on earrings that are too tight:

You might also try magnetic clip-on earrings. There are some here. (Ooh, clip-on stud earrings? Smile)
Dillard's has these.

I've had mixed experiences with magnetic earrings, though. The strength of a magnet can vary, and it's easy to lose an earring. The pinching, however, can be circumvented with a small, fabric band-aid at the back of the earlobe.

Finally, if she does experience pain after/during earring wear, massage the earlobes with rubbing alcohol. It will sting a little, but will help the pain.

Hope this helps!

Clip-on earrings are so painful, that at 34 years old - I finally broke down and got my ears pierced. I had been very stubborn about it because I'd made it to post-college age and figured why cave now? But one day I felt like wearing earrings and didn't feel like dealing with that pain, and before I knew it, I was having it done.

That's a personal decision, though, so I'm definitely not suggesting that you make that suggestion to your mother. I'm just saying consider ilibaby's suggestion.

At 36, I have no piercings and I am not caving. I also don't bother with clip earrings.

I am a ring, watch and bracelet girl.

If the dress has a lot going on around the neck, I would skip earrings anyway and go with a statement bracelet or c*cktail ring, as Ili suggested.

Clip-on earring are unbearable. The ones that don't hurt don't stay on. Anything heavy usually hurts and pulls off. I have tried the pads for them and it generally doesn't help and can often create problems. The magnetic earrings are the worse. The weak ones flip around and you lose them and the strong ones will stick to anything metal you get close to it (i.e. brushing your hair aside while wearing a bracelet). One time I walked too close to chalkboard and later found my earring stuck to it. They can also leave large raised, hard welts on your earlobes for weeks after wearing. Listen to your mommy she knows what she is talking about. If you still want to do earrings you can buy stick on studs that look like small rhinestone studs from a distance. Otherwise, just stay away.
