To answer both of the questions above, appaloosas have four distinct characteristics that make them different from other breeds: their colorful coat patterns, mottled skin, white scelera around their pupils, and striped hooves. They don't have to have all four to be an appaloosa, but most have several or all of these characteristics. As for breeding, the most difficult aspect is getting Mother Nature to cooperate! Most breeding is done in spring so the foals will be born close to the beginning of the year. This way, yearlings can use most of the year to grow big and strong for the show season. However, the natural pattern is to breed during the fall for spring foaling. (The horse's gestation period is 11 months.)
If we feel that there is a lot of potential for us to develop a foal into a show horse or possibly a stallion or broodmare, we may keep them ourselves. That tends to happen pretty rarely.
