If you guys haven't heard Columbus from the whiskers. (That one cute babysitter, that babysat with sophie in the first episode of season 3) Died? the story is he got runned over by a car, but what was a car doing in the middle of the Kalahari? What ever the reason was, Columbus was a great babysitter, he will never be forgotten.

Hm, the kat you are referring to is "Kim" and Kim only portrayed the manor meerkat known as Columbus in the episode "An Awfully Big Adventure". After that Columbus was portrayed by the KMP meerkat named Machu Pichu.

And yes Kim was run over by a car. There are main roads that cut through the reserve and the meerkats sometimes try and cross the road unsuccessfully. Fences do not stop them from wandering into unsafe territory. They are very small and curious animals. It is sad when they are run over and left in the road but at least they are found and identified by the volunteers.

Pronker is right. Kim(Columbus) was killed by the car. The exact date is September 21, 2006. And I want to say thank you to Pronker for telling us that they began to call Dudley Colombus. Thanks Pronker!

So, the real Columbus was Kim and there was never a Columbus? If there was a Columbus, does anyone know where he is at?

Yes it's true that Rocket Dog is gone, she was hit by a car and found by the side of the road either April 23rd or the 25th. The producers stated that yes it is true and it's my understanding that it wont be mentioned this season since it happened after the season ended.

RIP darling Rocket Dog while your reign ended so quickly our memories of you will be there for years to come.

Flower's sister (sorry, I always forget her name)

Pronker, I'm sorry but your comment of "It is sad when they are run over and left in the road but at least they are found and identified by the volunteers" doesn't give me much comfort since this is an ongoing problem. I know you care deeply about the meerkats and have seen things in person and so can provide a unique perspective that most of us cannot.

However, that said, we humans have invaded and taken over a large part of the meerkat's natural habitat. And while there no likely is some good in gaining an understanding of how these animals live and interact, we humans (and especially those in the Kalahari area) have an increasing responsibility to take more action, to be proactive in providing safeguards for these little guys (and other animals in the area). From what we've heard, trying to get drivers to slow down is pretty useless, so other means need to be put in place. People on this forum have made lots of good suggestions, such as building drains/tunnels at certain points under the roads, putting up "Meerkat Crossing" signs, etc. I'm sure there are lots of other options to consider.
