My name is Daemien, I wanted to share my adoption story.
My wife and I live in St. Ann, MO., I am a disabled Veteran who has had more than my share of medical issues. Since I spend a decent amount of time at home I thought I would get a dog as a companion. We went to the St. Charles Humane Society and checked what dogs were available.
The place was crowded and many dogs were available but something caugh my eye. There was a cage in the corner with a tray strapped to the front of the door. In this tray were at least four medications, it also had a sign that read "Special Diet, Special Medications, Handle with care"
I looked inside the cage and a tiny Cairn terrier mix looked back and me with the saddest eyes I had ever seen. You could tell she was weak, had been through hell and that's when she half sat up and wagged her tail. Her name was "Pepsi" and it was then that I noticed she was bald from her mid-back to her tail.
After inquiring about her we found she was on four daily medications and could only eat potato and duck food, which is extremely expensive.
We looked at some other dogs and decided to go home and think about it. The next morning I found myself taking my morning medications and then realized, we were more alike than I realized. As I took 8 of the 12 pills I have to take daily my mind was made up.
I went back to the Humane Society and told them I wanted Pepsi. After a few more weeks of recovering she was ready to come home.
She has been with us for 6 months now, is treated like a princess and has grown back all of her hair. She actually has had 4 haircuts! The Vet gave her a clean bill of health and she no longer needs 3 of the 4 medications. She LOVES her new home and has the energy of a puppy (she's 5).
Pepsi has truly been a blessing for us. If we cold afford it, I would buy her a playmate but finances on a disabled Vets income don't allow for the adoption fees, they have just gotten too high.
