That may be a slight misquote but it gets the point across. He has every right to think the blood tastes bad, i doubt that i'd enjoy it, but to say that in front of his hosts?
"some of the girls are starting to realise how unusual the lip plates are."
WHAT?! How are they any more unusual than some of the body modification americans do? And why does he assume that that is the reason they are starting to not wear them?
Oops i sweared in my last post. Sorry i'm used to less moderated messsage boards. I'll re post and avoid the swearing.
I can't believe that he just shined that light on his host while they were sleeping. That's insane. They were definatly bothered by the light, who wouldn't be.
And when he flicked the persons arm? What is wrong with this man.
It was definately a light. But either way that's not the only thing wrong with this show. I have two other examples in this thread. (plus more examples in the light shining event) I saw a lot more than that and i'm sure i'll see more next week.
Actually Nehllah, that is an infared light he used. I asked my brother who is ex-military and he said that it IS definetely an infared light. Normal camera lights do not reflect light in the pupil of the eye as an infared light does. A normal light is not green-look at it again you can clearly see that the light is green. Why don't you check things out throughly before you go off on a tangent?

Why is everyone focuing on the light issue? That's only one of a great number of things i mentioned in this thread. I thought flicking the persons arm and talking while they were trying to sleep and complaining about how close they slept was worse than shining a light on them (which i guess they weren't).
I mentioned the light because that is the one thing that I know about. The other things I think you're just being picky about and I didn't want to go there but since you want someone to go there, we'll go there.
You complained that when he said the line "When I said it wasn't terrible, that's because I'd only had a little bit" that he was basically rude to say it in front of his hosts. It's not like he just ate brussel sprouts or something like that, he was drinking warm animal blood. Get it? Animal blood-warm animal blood. You don't think you would have said the same thing? Also his hosts don't speak english so they don't know what he said unless the translator conveyed it to them. The lip plates-"How are they any more unusual than some of the body modification americans do?" You are comparing lip plates that require the lower teeth to be knocked out and just below the lower lip split to wear them to body piercings and tattoos, none of which to my knowledge require that drastic of a change to the body. You're comparing apples to oranges, my dear. Talking while they were sleeping and the arm flicking were rude I'll admit but I don't think it bothered them too bad-I talk in my sleep all the time and no one has complained yet.
Does the show have problems-yes it does but this is only the first couple of shows. Give it a chance to get better!
I'm sure i'd not enjoy drinking blood, because i have just about the weakest stomach of anyone i know, but i would make every effort to hide that.
The lips disks really do not seem odd to me. At all. I mean women in our culture get little bags of silicone surgically implanted in their chests .. or even weirder cheek/chin implants. And why do people in our society do this? The same reason the women get lip disks, to be more attractive to the opposite sex.
Guys and gals, if I wanted to argue, I would just stay on my ABC DH board! Just look at the tribes and their customs, try to assimilate what is going on, and don't make Bruce Parry a scapegoat for every facial expression or piece of body language he uses. It must be a difficult task at best, to be the narrator, much less what the camera crew sees!
I don't blame Bruce. I blame the producers. Hell, if somebody offered to pay me to travel around the world and be filmed, I'd do it too. I also blame the editors (though I'm sure they're just doing what the producers want). Sure Bruce can make a disgusted face when he drinks cow blood for the first time. But the choice to include that shot in the show reflects the underlying ideology of sensationalism and exoticism that undermine any efforts to portray a realistic and productive image of "other cultures."
Guys, if you hate the show so much, don't watch it. You must have bitter and meaningless lives to just sit around watching TV shows you don't like and go to online forums to complain about them. Dear God, get a hobby.
I want to deepley congratulate Bruce for the excelent job he´s done, i think the show is fascinating and so is he, he must have large pelotas as we say here in mexico, to do all those things most people who are totally disconected to our roots, our survival and the beginig of life as a society wouldn´t dare, i know a few... I really recomend the book Aztec by gary Jennings....Also here in mexico there are still native tribes that would be intresting to see on the show, like the Huicholes, that are a nomad tibe or the ones in Chiapas. Thank you to all that make this show possible, it´s the best.
When he said some girls were realizing just how unusual the lip plates really are, you obviously missed the context in which he said it. He had just mentioned that only one other tribe does this particular form of body modification. The word "unusual" was not used in the sense of comparing lip-plates with other forms of body-modification and their relative "weirdness", but rather to mean that the use of lip plates is an extremely uncommon practice among the peoples of the world, whereas others, such as tattooing, are more widespread. "Unusual" is not a value-judgment, it merely describes the rareness of the act. Quite simply, before gaining knowledge of the larger world, most of these girls and women logically assumed that a good segment of the world's population wore plates in their lips; now that they have been exposed to more peoples and cultures, they are beginning to realize that this form of body-modification is, as Bruce said, relatively unusual, and therefore they are opting not to submit to it. They are realizing their value does not have to rest on having a plate in their lip, as evidenced by billions of women around the world who marry and raise families without lip plates.
I think some of you are missing the fact that, while Bruce notices things he considers (as a westerner) bizarre in the cultures he visits, the show also emphasizes how bizarre the tribes think Bruce is... they mock him all the time. Remember when the "bizarre" cannibal tribes thought that raisins were the nastiest thing ever? I think one of the best points of the show is to keep that balance and show that differences are mutual rather than only showing a westerner who thinks the cultures are bizarre.
I totally agree with everything you people have said to support the show. I think this is a wonderful show, and Mr. Parry does a fantastic job of telling people about these tribe that probably most of us didn't even know existed! To those of you who are picking apart the show and taking things out of context to make it seem like a bad show, if you want to be critics, pick apart hollywood movies. They have more flaws than this show ever will.
