OMG!! I work with female youthful offenders everyday and the things you portrayed in tonights episode are just ridiculous!!!! Let's just sit here and blame everyone for all our problems! Please! The problem is that we have no means of educating our youth to not follow these psychos! Our prisons are full and we as a society as so fucking willing to blame anyone except ourselves! We stick them in prisons to "teach them a lesson" but the lesson is not one to feel good about themselves, to believe they can be someone and that they are intelligent enough to pursue a career without having to result to crime and drugs! I tell my YO classes that yes, they have addictive personalities, but it is up to them to find a "legal" and more productive addiction to follow, such as EDUCATION!!!!!
The shows I see on your program are just those where the individual followed or was "classified" into a specific category. The issue today is that the classification officers don't really give a crap. I've seen in HERCI (FL) and in other institutions. They only care as long as a requirement is being fulfilled for each institution, not whether the person (which is the reason) understands and follows the recipe to a possibly successful life.
OK, yes I'm a bit bitter. Why? Because I am an Instructor in the system and have seen the correctional officers (who are supposedly their mentors and guides) teach them to believe in rumors, to beleive that what they do doesn't matter, to make them feel useless, worthless!!!!! I am appalled by the practices that go on in these instutions!!! The youthful offenders are taught that if they are an adult they have fewer "rules" to follow". How is this fair? All of them should be marching, adults included. They should be the ones that set the example and if they cannot, then they should not be allowed to mix with the youthful population!!!!!!!
God, I could go on but this is enough about how I feel you portray the shows.
I see no one responded to you but the issue is always going to be society. The individual is responsible for their actions but ultimately society has a role to play. Most have not had any proper parental upbringing but it is still society that put the parents in the deplorable position that exists for them in the first place.
We can go back as far as we want but the issue lies in the governments ability to ignore the poor and only concentrate on what can push this under the carpet. You're position is an admirable position and one that is never appreciated. Let me be someone to commend you for doing something that not many have the courage to do.. to care enough to try and help those who can't or don't know how to help themselves. Keep doing what you're doing, there are people who appreciate your work.
