In a few weeks we're going to be shooting some special video for Deadliest Catch fans -- insider info on Dutch Harbor presented by the captains themselves.
What do YOU want them to show you about their home away from home?
I would like to see more details on the support operations, like the varrious different companies that are used when one the fishing boats needs repairs. We have only touched on this.
I'd like to see more of where the captains and crews hang out when ashore. Also what effects on the local community/industy the fishing seasons have, such as when all the boats are stocking up at the local shops. What I'd really like is to be there watching the boats preparing and setting out of the harbour, but as I live in England, it's so difficult to get there.
Bloopers would be awesome! (thanks Scottie_k). As well as more of the Captains and crew just playing around! I'd pay money for that. (hint, hint, Discovery - another DVD you could sell!!)
I would also like to see like an aerial of Dutch - understand the logistics of where the boats dock compared to the places the guys hang out.
Tours of the boats (the Time Bandit in particular) would be fantastic!
I am definately for more bloopers, especially with Mike Rowe and his crew, I LOVE THEM!! But would love to see more of the off time too! Do they sleep, do they have any off time, what about the injured that stay, do they get any extra rest! What do they do in the off season, we know Sig fishes for other catch, but what about the rest? Why do some only do king crab not opelio?
How about a tour through the boats including the processors. Maybe more of the off season what else do the guys fish for ? Salmon? More of there life off the boat. Bloopers would be great remember its only funny till someone get hurt then its hilarious.
I'd like to see more of the inside of the boats (especially the Time Bandit). It's kind of hard to get a feel for how it's set up.
More of their life when they're in Dutch (where they hang out, etc.)
Actually more of Dutch period. It'd be neat to hear what the locals think of Deadliest Catch and how popular it's become. I'm sure they get fans into town, would nice to hear what they think of that too.
I'd like to see more about the captains' families back in Seattle or wherever - how do they cope while Dad/Mom/Sis/Bro is away for months doing such a dangerous job? Is there satellite telephone on all the boats? How often do crew members get to call home (vs. captains)?
I'd like to know why crew members have safety equipment such as personal flotatin devices but don't wear it when they are out climbing around on top of a stack of ice-covered pots? Why do the captains let them get away with that?
Also, how about having a Certified Safety Professional (I'd recommend Del Sandfort at Colorado State University, 970-491-6462) come aboard one of the boats & film him consulting with one of the captains (Sig or Phil, for example) about how he could make his boat and crew safer without spending a hunk of extra money?
The crab season is much longer and the quotas are larger this year. Will the captains go for shorter days to keep their crews functioning for a longer season? We saw guys working for >24 hrs. straight; do captains that avoid that have safer boats?
How do captains keep track of what weather is coming up? Do they have weather radar on the boats?
i think a good season opener or the last show of the season would to more personable with Sig and his crew as well as the other captains and crews. You know thier lives off the fleet with families and the like.
Thank you for asking Kristen. I would like to know who lives in Dutch Harbor. The crews you cover seem to all fly in, but I suspect that is not the case. Some of those guys must call DH home.
I would like to see more of the town, not just the inside of a bar and the dock and the church spire. Take a helicopter up and give us some idea of the layout and size of the place. Make it more than a name for us because many of us are very curious about Dutch Harbor and care about the place.
Do you know why I am here? Because DC is not just a show; you have introduced us to people that we now care about. I logged on because I know they are fishing NOW and I worry about them out there.
John McPhee once wrote that he always hated it when the weatherman would say a storm had moved safely out to sea. I understood what he meant, but I never felt it until I saw this show.
I would like to see how they repair the equipment in the freezing temperatures with 20-30 foot waves spashing around them. Even on the calmer days, welding and trying to push bolts through holes that are frozen over can't be all that easy.
WE WOULD LIKE TO SEE WHAT IT TAKES TO GET READY FOR THIS NEXT SEASON COMING UP OR ANY-TRAVELING FROM SEATTLE/DUTCH/UNALASKA OR IF THEY COME FROM KODIAK? WHEN THEY GET TO DUTCH WHAT DO THEY DO TO THE GEAR TO REPAIR/SET UP BEFORE LOADING UNTO BOAT/AND AFTER-WHAT DO THEY DO AFTER THE SEASON CATCH IS DONE WITH THE GEAR/BOATS-IS THERE A DIFFERENT CREW FOR DIFFERENT SEASONS, WHERE ARE THEY GOING FISHING NEXT AND WHAT?
I would like to see where they go and what they do when they are not working and before they leave for fishing. Thier favorite places in Dutch harbor... ALSO, I really really enjoyed the mini-series "After The Catch" I HOPE you plan to film more of these. It is so interesting. I wish Discovery would offer the After The catch for sale on DVD. I own The Pilot episode and seasons, 1,2,& 3 of DC on dvd... I would definately buy the After The Catch series if it were available!
I wonder if the Captains and Crews of ALL the vessels know how much us fans care about them? I love DC (my favorite show!) because these are REAL people! They have the Good Old Fashioned Work Ethic not seen very much in today's society. I have learned soooo much about Alaska and the fishing industry. I would have never imagined I would be such a fanatic, but DC is addicting. I hope to watch DC for many more seasons, and I hope that there will be many more seasons ahead. In my opinion, these guys are real life heroes, because they risk thier lives to provide seafood for consumers and to support thier families. I am such a devoted fan... At one point I even wrote to General Mills. I thought it would be awesome to see the captains faces on the Wheaties boxes- a limited-edition type of thing. General Mills rejected my idea though. Another cool thing to see, perhaps in a behind the scenes documentary or something.... Have the captains and crew memebers talk about the kind of fan mail they receive... I'll bet they get an astronomical amount! Anyways, I cannot wait for season 4! Please keep putting little tidbits on your website to keep us fans happy
Kirstin, That sounds great as I'm an avid fan of "The Deadliest Catch". Mythbusters stink lol. I can't wait fer the return of the show.
Also include bloopers of the show and show what the crews do in the off season.

I'd actually like to see some other fisheries represented. I'm a sixteen year salmon gillnetter out of Sand Point. I love the show and how it has brought our industry into the public eye. It also seems that it has really sparked the imaginations of many viewers. Apparently the harbormaster at Dutch Harbor is besieged by phone calls from people wanting jobs on the Northwestern. However Crab isn't the only money maker in Alaska. Salmon, halibut, cod and several other fisheries exist. Why not have a show on them? In fact it even lends itself to a game show style format. Hire two purseseiners and have the captains select the crews from viewers who wish to participate. See who catch the most salmon. No prize money would be necessary since the winners are the people who make the most money anyway. Even the losers walks away with cash. A salmon season runs all summer so there would be plenty of drama to hold the viewers attention. The boats are closer to shore so you could get some fantastic scenery shots. Crews sometimes get to go to shore and mess around. Just in my area there are three ghost towns, hotsprings, a petrified forest, Wild Bison, Bears, and whales passing through all summer. Since the crews have more off time it would allow you to show some of the support operations (like the tavern) or some of the local businesses. (such as the Tavern.) We could even see what the crews like to do once back on shore. (the Tavern again.) Several variations could even be used. Male Crews vs. Female Crews. Army vs. Civs. Old boat vs. New boat. It would be a reality show without all of the fake missions and false urgency of a show like Survivor.
