I'd like to see a segment on the women that fish in AK. I used to fish in the Bering Sea,
That would be interesting.

There are a few that used to fish, and one that I remember used to run a boat out west.

Does each member give a percentage of their earnings towards this?

Boats have insurance, and usually there is an insurance policy for those lost at sea. That pays out for loss of life.
There is a policy for injury called "fishermans fund" that is used for injury, then the insurance policy kicks in for the crewman that is injured at sea if he has to take the season off due to the boat injury.

I think they should no longer show Keith Colburn and the Wizard crew. He's a jerk and I'm sick of hearing him blasting everybody. I can't imagine someone wanting to be a deckhand for him after seeing the show. He may just be shooting his foot off by acting the way he does. One day he'll have no one to go along with him. He's not camera friendly and all in all, a big jackass!

I was there in 1981. We walked through the old military base once to short cut to the fuel dock. There was a big warehouse with a marble floor that I was told they used as a gym during WWII. I think a little history would be nice. There's also a plot of trees up on the mountain that was planted back during that time. I was told there are no trees on the Aleutian Islands because there's no way for the seeds to travel out there. I believe this popular "old fishermans tale" may be false.
In 1981 the airport was terrifying to land at. The pilot landed with the brakes on and the reverse thrusters going. When the airsraft turned the ramp to the harbor was just off the wing. The Airport is known as one of the worst in Alaska to land at. It's still scarry even though its been lenghtened and improved over the years. A pilots views would be interesting.

Kristen,

I would love to see web cam at Dutch Harbor. Current weather conditions link. Maybe Web Cam on boats so 24/7 you can take a peek.
Calendar with men/boats and crabs.
More shots of Alaska itself.
Mention of how they are handling the fuel situation - do they hedge. Pipe line in back yard must help.

I love DC (my favorite show!) because these are REAL people! They have the Good Old Fashioned Work Ethic not seen very much in today's society.
I have learned soooo much about Alaska and the fishing industry. I would have never imagined I would be such a fanatic, but DC is addicting. I hope to watch DC for many more seasons, and I hope that there will be many more seasons ahead. In my opinion, these guys are real life heroes, because they risk thier lives to provide seafood for consumers and to support thier families. I am such a devoted fan... At one point I even wrote to General Mills. I thought it would be awesome to see the captains faces on the Wheaties boxes- a limited-edition type of thing.
General Mills rejected my idea though.
Another cool thing to see, perhaps in a behind the scenes documentary or something.... Have the captains and crew memebers talk about the kind of fan mail they receive... I'll bet they get an astronomical amount! Anyways, I cannot wait for season 4! Please keep putting little tidbits on your website to keep us fans happy Smile

More about the boats and how they go about getting ready for the new season, and repairs to each boat. More bloopers and things we don't usually see from each boat. More of the guys and crew on what they do in their off time. Also a bit more on the support operations also.

How do the Captians choose any new Greenhorns that come to help the regular crew on each boat? I would also like to know the history of each boat, the captians and their families. Sig, John, Phil and the rest.how their fathers all got started. They didn't just wake up on day and say " I think I'll work and get a boat and go fishing! Do all these guys work for the same company?

When the camera men are filming the crew they are all moving in the same way so except for seeing the waves and the films of boat you don't get a sense of how the boat is pitching and rolling. You see it going up and down on the shots of the boat but not when on the boat. How about a camera on a gyroscope so it stays level and we can see what the crews really have to put up with. Not too much though or we all might end up seasick.

I like the web cam idea.
I like the idea of following the men off season. Andy mentioned a ranch in Montana.
How about the men and women of Dutch Harbor? Are they would be fishermen that couldn't get on a boat, ran out of money and had to stay? Do they love the town or the people? Or the atmosphere of fishing?
Have Mike walk around town and interview people. Maybe find a Dirty Job somewhere?

Another idea to add to a show. How about putting a camera in a crab pot and let it film what happens from the time the pot lands to when it is pulled up - time lapsed, of course.
